In a simulation?
Simulation theory is having a moment. Elon Musk says the odds that we are living in base reality are “one in billions.” Nick Bostrom’s philosophical trilemma — the argument that we are almost certainly simulated — has been cited in academic journals, TED talks, and late-night conversations that start with “but what if, though.” The idea has colonized popular culture so thoroughly that it has almost stopped feeling like a fringe hypothesis and started feeling like received wisdom.
And yet. And yet.
There is something about simulation theory that, the more carefully you look at it, starts to feel less like a profound insight into the nature of reality and more like a very clever way of avoiding the most extraordinary fact available to a thinking being: that reality, as it actually is, (blog on website)
Simulation theory captivates many because it addresses a fundamental question: what is the nature of our reality? While it’s tempting to embrace the idea that we live in a simulation — especially given endorsements from prominent figures such as Elon Musk — I’ve found that exploring this theory deeply reveals more questions than answers. From my experience discussing simulation theory with friends and reading diverse perspectives, what stands out is the human desire to explain the unknown. Philosophical ideas like Bostrom’s trilemma push us to think about whether advanced civilizations might run simulations indistinguishable from reality. Yet, this also risks diverting attention from appreciating the natural world’s wondrous complexity— like the intricate atomic structures and emergent phenomena that shape our everyday life. Embracing simulation theory sometimes feels like a way to dodge confronting the extraordinary fact of our existence itself. Instead of seeing reality as a cleverly coded program, it helps me to focus on fresh scientific discoveries that highlight the richness of atoms and cosmic processes we continue to unravel daily. This approach doesn’t diminish mystery; rather, it invites curiosity to explore reality’s actual fabric instead of an assumed simulation. In conversations, I often encounter a pivot from accepting reality “as is” toward speculative discussions about simulated worlds. While stimulating, it’s important to balance this with grounded understanding and appreciation of what can be observed and tested. Simulation theory can inspire us to rethink reality but should not replace the wonder rooted in authentic scientific inquiry and firsthand experience. Ultimately, the fascination with simulation theory offers valuable philosophical reflection but also a reminder: some mysteries about existence might not need definitive answers to enrich our appreciation for the universe. The true marvel lies in the very atoms making up everything around us, inviting ongoing discovery beyond any simulation hypothesis.
