The story follows Damien, a woman trying desperately to break free from a cycle of violence and control, only to be forced into harming those she loves. Even after ending the cycle, she’s punished in the afterlife by a hellish king, who subjects her to further torment. While the premise of a woman fighting against being used is compelling, the execution left me frustrated. The repeated suffering and lack of agency for the protagonist felt overwhelming, especially as a Black woman’s pain is central to the narrative. By chapter four, I found it difficult to continue, as it echoed too much of real-life struggles. While the writing is solid and the concept has potential, I personally couldn’t enjoy it. 2.5/5.
