✨Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen 🌟🌟⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The story follows Simidele, a mami wata (mermaid) created by Yemoja to guide the souls of those who die at sea back to Olodumare.

It’s a beautiful tale that blends African mythology with echoes of classic fairy tales—like Hans Christian Andersen’s story of mermaids turning into sea foam when they fall in love with humans. Bowen also weaves in the haunting reality of the Atlantic slave trade, even referencing how sharks changed their swimming patterns because of the countless bodies thrown overboard.

This book reminds me a bit of Percy Jackson, a mix of myth, adventure, and heart but with a deeper, more emotional touch.

I understand why no one really telling what happening in the book because The writing is so immersive and poetic that it feels like you’re meant to feel it rather than analyze it. As a mythology lover, I was captivated from the start. I never knew much about the Orisha before this, and learning about them through Simidele’s story was amazing. There’s also a beautiful moment that describes braids forming a map, it’s one of my favorite details.

Just a note: the book does address the horrors of the slave trade. There are scenes and flashbacks involving kidnapping, death, and violence. It’s not overly graphic, but if those themes are triggering, I’d recommend approaching it carefully or skipping it.

Shoutout to the library for having the audiobook version! I really loved listening to this story. It felt almost spiritual, like I was meant to read it. When I was younger, I was a “mermaid girl,” so this book spoke directly to that part of me. The dreamer and the one that wish they could call ocean home.

If I ever have children, this is a book I would pass on to them.

Just so you know, it’s a tragic romance. 😪

I finished Skin of the Sea on November 3. Two Christmases ago, my brother gifted me both books, and I didn’t realize then how important they’d become to me. They mean more than any rating could capture. Honestly, just bury these books with me.

💐Now I’m off to read the next one—bye! 💛

... Read moreSince sharing my initial thoughts on Natasha Bowen's *Skin of the Sea*, I've been thinking about what makes this book truly special, especially for new readers discovering it through its striking cover or the author's name. It's more than just a story; it's an experience that lingers. One of the things that captivated me most, and what I believe many are curious about when they search for 'Skin of the Sea Natasha Bowen,' is the rich tapestry of African mythology woven throughout. Before this book, while I loved mythology, my knowledge of the Orisha and figures like the Mami Wata was limited. Simidele, as a mami wata created by Yemoja, isn't just a fantastical character; she's a gateway into a vibrant spiritual tradition. Mami Wata, often depicted as a powerful, alluring water spirit, holds significant cultural importance across West, Central, and Southern Africa and the African diaspora. Bowen doesn't just borrow these figures; she imbues them with life, purpose, and a sense of ancient wisdom that feels incredibly authentic. Learning about these deities through Simidele’s eyes made the world of Skin of the Sea feel vast and deeply rooted, offering a fresh perspective on merfolk legends that goes far beyond typical Western fairy tales. And speaking of first impressions, we have to talk about the cover! I know many of you are looking for 'skin of the sea book cover' details, and for good reason. The imagery is absolutely stunning and perfectly sets the tone. The cover features a dark-skinned woman with curly hair and gold jewelry emerging from water, her gaze direct and powerful. The title in gold letters against the deep blues and greens immediately catches the eye. It's such a strong visual representation of Simidele herself—a being of immense strength and beauty, tied to the ocean, yet also hinting at the precious, transformative journey within. The quote from Nicola Yoon is also a great touch, promising a captivating read. This cover isn't just art; it's an invitation to explore a world rarely seen in mainstream fantasy, and it perfectly captures the essence of the powerful, mythical narrative Natasha Bowen delivers. Natasha Bowen herself, as the brilliant mind behind this creation, has crafted not just an adventure but a poignant exploration of history and identity. When you search for 'Natasha Bowen author,' you're looking for the voice that brings such complex themes to life. Her ability to confront the horrors of the Atlantic slave trade, even referencing how sharks' patterns changed due to the unspeakable acts, while simultaneously crafting a tale of magic and resilience, is truly remarkable. It's this delicate balance that makes Skin of the Sea so impactful – it acknowledges pain but also celebrates enduring spirit and the power of connection. The tragic romance aspect, which I mentioned earlier, adds another layer of human emotion to this epic journey, reminding us that even in grand mythological narratives, personal heartbreak can resonate deeply. For anyone who was enchanted by the blend of myth, history, and raw emotion in *Skin of the Sea*, I highly recommend exploring more works that delve into diverse mythologies or historical fantasy. This book truly broadened my horizons, making me eager to find other stories that challenge conventional narratives and introduce me to rich cultural traditions. It's a journey not just for Simidele, but for the reader too, into worlds both ancient and tragically recent. If you’re looking for a book that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page, one that sparks curiosity about its origins and characters, then Natasha Bowen's Skin of the Sea is absolutely it. It's a book I’ll treasure and happily pass down, knowing it carries stories that deserve to be heard and re-heard.
