The vital Functions

I finally ordered something from the TikTok Shop and honestly, I didn’t fully trust it at first. But I’m so glad I took the chance.

Zachary Wilcox is an artist I’ve seen on TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter, and knowing he works at a comic book shop made me even more excited to pick up his comic. I placed my order on January 1st and it arrived by the 8th, which was surprisingly fast.

I originally bought this book because the artwork is absolutely beautiful, but the story is what really pulled me in.

The narrative follows a son on a mission to find his father, driven by a need to confront the unresolved pain of the past. At the same time, the father is struggling with his own history, trying to protect his son from a war their great-grandfather began. What I loved most is that nothing is explained outright at the beginning you’re trusted to follow along, piece things together, and slowly uncover the truth. That kind of storytelling feels intentional and rewarding.

It’s emotional, layered, and visually stunning. I found myself completely absorbed, turning pages faster than I expected.

I genuinely cannot wait for Volume 2 to see where this goes next. 10/10 I need the next book like yesterday.

... Read moreOkay, so if you’re anything like me, you’re always on the hunt for those hidden gems in the comic world. And let me tell you, 'Vital Functions #01' by Zachary Wilcox is absolutely one of them. While my first review just scratched the surface of why I loved it, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what truly makes this comic stand out and why it’s worth adding to your collection. First off, let’s talk about the art. The OCR results mentioning visuals like the red fish on the cover, the character with an umbrella, and the dynamic panels are spot on. Zachary Wilcox's artistic style is just *chef's kiss*. It's not just pretty; it's incredibly evocative. From the moment you see the plastic sleeve around the comic, to flipping through the pages displaying detailed characters in a vehicle or interacting with glowing, abstract shapes, every panel feels intentional. The way he uses color and line work to convey emotion and atmosphere is masterful. You can practically feel the weight of the characters' journeys and the mystery surrounding their world. Even the sketch on the back of the comic, with the character wearing glasses and a tiny creature, gives you a peek into the unique charm of his creations. Then there’s the storytelling. The original article mentioned a son on a mission to find his father and a father trying to protect his son from a war. This premise alone is compelling, but what truly elevates 'Vital Functions #01' is the way it unfolds. It doesn't hold your hand. Instead, it respects your intelligence, trusting you to piece together the narrative clues. This approach makes uncovering the truth incredibly rewarding. You're constantly analyzing the subtle expressions, the environmental details – like the character at a bus stop – and the fragmented dialogue to build your understanding of this rich, layered world. It’s a comic that invites you to lean in and truly engage with its mysteries. What really resonated with me is the emotional depth. The story tackles themes of unresolved pain, legacy, and the complex bond between family members. It’s not just an action-packed adventure; it’s a deeply human story wrapped in a fantastical, slightly sci-fi package. You feel for these characters, you root for them, and you desperately want to know what happens next. The pacing is fantastic, building suspense and delivering emotional punches exactly when they’re most impactful. Discovering indie creators like Zachary Wilcox, especially through platforms like TikTok Shop, has been such a joy because you uncover these passionate projects that might otherwise fly under the radar. If you're looking for a comic that offers both stunning visuals and a narrative that will stick with you long after you've turned the last page, 'Vital Functions #01' is an absolute must-read. It’s a testament to the power of independent storytelling and art. Seriously, don't walk, run to get your hands on this one!
