Winter Hiking at Clifty Creek

After our awesome winter hike at Clifty Creek, I wanted to share a few tips for anyone planning their own visit! Clifty Creek Conservation Area in Missouri is truly a hidden gem, especially if you love nature. We've heard amazing things about the natural bridge there – it's definitely on our list for the next trip! Before you go, it's super important to check the Missouri Department of Conservation website for any specific updates, trail conditions, or regulations. Sometimes trails can be muddy or icy in winter, so knowing ahead makes a huge difference. Parking is usually pretty straightforward, often near the main trailheads, but arriving earlier on popular days is always a good idea to snag a spot. We always pack a physical trail map or download one beforehand, just in case cell service is spotty, even though the trails are generally well-marked. And remember to pack out everything you pack in – let's keep Clifty Creek beautiful! Hiking in winter with kids, like we did, requires a bit more preparation than a summer stroll. For outerwear, layered clothing is key to staying warm and dry. Think base layers (avoid cotton!), a mid-layer for insulation, and a waterproof/windproof outer shell. Don't forget hats, gloves, and warm, waterproof boots – cold feet can end a hike quickly! Snacks are non-negotiable for little ones (and adults!). We packed sandwiches, fruit snacks, and plenty of water in insulated bottles. A small first-aid kit is always a must, too, just for those little scrapes or blisters. Even if you're not hiking with a dog, thinking about essentials helps you remember everything for your human companions! Getting the kids excited for a 3.7-mile trek, especially in winter, can be a challenge but totally worth it! My biggest tip? Make it an adventure, not just a walk. We play 'I Spy' or look for animal tracks in the snow. Setting small goals, like 'let's make it to that big tree!' helps break up the distance. And celebrating their achievements, like finishing a tough climb, makes them feel so proud. We even bring a small journal or a camera for them to document their own 'nature school' findings. Remember, it's about the experience and building a love for the outdoors, not just the miles. If they're having fun, they'll want to do it again!
