MAKE BABY FOOD WITH ME 🐣👶🏻

... Read moreMaking homemade baby food, especially for my little one, has been such a rewarding journey! When I first started, I was a bit overwhelmed, but discovering how easy and nutritious it is to make something like butternut squash puree changed everything. It's truly a joy to know exactly what's going into their tiny tummies. So, if you're looking to MAKE BABY FOOD WITH ME, let me share some of my favorite tips and tricks for this amazing vegetable. Why Butternut Squash is a Baby Food Superstar From my experience, butternut squash baby food is a fantastic choice for starting solids. It's naturally sweet, which babies tend to love, and it's packed with essential nutrients like Vitamin A (beta-carotene), Vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. These are all crucial for a growing baby's immune system, vision, and digestive health. Plus, its creamy texture makes it ideal for young infants, like my 5-month-old. How I Prepare Butternut Squash for My Baby The “how-to” part can seem daunting, but it's really quite simple! Here's my step-by-step guide on how to prepare butternut squash for baby: Selection: I always look for a squash that feels heavy for its size and has a firm, unblemished skin. Wash & Prep: First, I give the squash a good wash. Then, I carefully cut it in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds and stringy bits. You can peel it first or after cooking – I often find it easier to peel after it's been softened. Cooking: I've tried steaming and roasting, and while steaming is quick, roasting truly brings out the natural sweetness of the butternut squash. For roasting, I cut the squash into 1-inch cubes, drizzle lightly with a tiny bit of olive oil (optional for babies under 6 months, or you can skip it), and roast at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes until tender. If I'm steaming, I place the cubes in a steamer basket over boiling water for about 10-15 minutes until soft. This is how I cook butternut squash for a 6-month-old or any age, really! My Go-To Butternut Squash Puree Recipe Once the squash is cooked and cooled slightly, it's time to make the puree! Transfer the cooked butternut squash cubes to a blender or food processor. Add a little breast milk, formula, or filtered water to achieve your desired consistency. For a 5-month-old, I aim for a very smooth, thin puree. As they get older (around 8 months or 9 months old), you can leave it a bit thicker or even slightly lumpy to introduce new textures. Blend until smooth, scraping down the sides as needed. Taste it yourself – no need for salt or sugar, it's delicious as is! Exciting Butternut Squash Baby Food Combinations! One of the best parts about homemade baby food is experimenting! Once your baby has tried butternut squash on its own, you can start exploring butternut squash baby food combinations. Here are some of my baby's favorites: Butternut Squash & Apple Puree: The sweetness of apple complements the squash beautifully. Butternut Squash & Pear Puree: Another classic, offering a slightly different sweetness. Butternut Squash & Sweet Potato: A powerhouse of nutrients and flavors. Butternut Squash & Chicken/Lentils: For older babies (around 8-9 months), I've started mixing in finely pureed chicken or lentils for added protein. This addresses queries like "what to mix squash with for baby food" perfectly. Butternut Squash & Quinoa/Rice Cereal: Mixing with a little cooked quinoa or infant rice cereal can add texture and extra goodness for babies who are ready for it. Storage Made Easy I always make a larger batch and store the extra. I simply spoon the cooled puree into ice cube trays, freeze until solid, then transfer the cubes to a freezer-safe bag. This way, I have perfectly portioned homemade butternut squash baby food ready to go for weeks! When it's time to serve, I just grab a cube or two and thaw it in the fridge or gently warm it up. Making your own baby food is a rewarding experience, and I hope sharing my journey with butternut squash recipes for babies helps you feel more confident embarking on yours!
