Can’t stay off your phone at night? Do this

You don’t need perfect habits to protect your health.

You need better defaults. ✨

If you can’t (or won’t) stay off your phone at night…

at least change the light.

Blue light at night →

suppresses melatonin

signals “morning” to your brain

disrupts deep sleep

Red light →

less disruptive

easier on your nervous system

supports a smoother wind-down

Is no phone ideal? Yes.

Is red light better than scrolling under bright white LEDs? Also yes.

Health isn’t all-or-nothing.

Start where you are.

Reduce what you can.

Protect your sleep — because everything else depends on it.

Save this for tonight 🌙

... Read moreAs someone who has struggled with late-night phone usage, I found that completely avoiding my phone before bed was unrealistic. Instead, I started experimenting with changing my phone's display settings to reduce the impact on my sleep cycle. By activating red light or color filter modes on my device (often available in the accessibility settings), I noticed a significant improvement in how quickly I could wind down after scrolling. Blue light emitted from screens disrupts the natural production of melatonin, a hormone critical for regulating our circadian rhythm. This is why exposure to typical bright white or blue-toned LEDs sends a signal to your brain that it's daytime, making it harder to fall asleep and enjoy deep, restorative rest. Switching to red light mode minimizes this disruption because red wavelengths are less likely to interfere with melatonin production. Many modern smartphones offer this feature through settings like "Color Filters" or "Night Mode" where you can customize the display to emit more red and reduce blue tones. From personal experience, enabling red light mode around an hour before bedtime dramatically improved my sleep quality. I slept longer and woke up feeling more refreshed. It was easier on my nervous system, helping me to relax and fall asleep naturally rather than feeling wired from screen stimulation. Additionally, using quick accessibility shortcuts (such as triple-clicking the side button on some devices) allows for toggling red light mode on and off without digging through menus, making it a convenient habit to build. While the ideal scenario is reducing screen time before bed altogether, these practical adjustments can help you protect your sleep health without demanding drastic changes. Start where you are, try implementing red light mode tonight, and observe how your sleep responds. Protecting your rest is foundational to overall wellbeing — and it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing.
