Saturday morning before a snow apocalypse
Wow, what a weekend it's shaping up to be! My local weather forecast just called for a serious "snow apocalypse" heading our way, and I knew I couldn't just sit around. So, this Saturday morning before a snow apocalypse hits, I decided to tackle my prep list head-on. Honestly, it feels a bit dramatic to say 'apocalypse,' but after living through a few big storms, I know it's always better to be over-prepared than under. First things first, I always hit the grocery store. My main goal is stocking up on non-perishables: canned goods, pasta, rice, and plenty of snacks. Think comfort food! Hot chocolate mix, some extra coffee, and ingredients for a hearty soup are always on my list. And don't forget water! I usually buy a few extra gallons, just in case. If you have pets, make sure their food and any necessary medications are also topped up. It's easy to forget them in the rush, but they rely on us! Next, I turn my attention to the house. I made sure all my devices were fully charged – phone, power bank, laptop. Losing power is always a possibility during a heavy snowfall, and having a way to stay connected or entertained without electricity is key. I also gathered all my flashlights, making sure they had fresh batteries. Candles are nice for ambiance, but flashlights are essential for safety! I even checked our carbon monoxide detector; it's a small thing, but so important. I also take a moment to look at how we can keep warm. Extra blankets, cozy sweaters, and thick socks are pulled out of storage. I’ve learned that layering is your best friend when the temperatures drop inside. If you have a fireplace, ensure you have enough firewood. Even if you don't, making sure windows and doors are properly sealed can make a huge difference in keeping the warmth in. Outside, I tried to get a head start on clearing the porch and walkways. It’s always easier to shovel lighter snow in intervals than to tackle a massive drift all at once. If you have a car, ensure your gas tank is full – you never know when you might need to run an emergency errand, or just keep the engine running for warmth. An emergency car kit with blankets, a first-aid kit, and jumper cables is also a good idea. Finally, I make sure to plan for some fun! Being cooped up inside can get boring, so I pull out some board games, a few good books I've been meaning to read, and download some movies or podcasts. It's about turning a potentially stressful situation into a cozy, relaxing retreat. There's something oddly satisfying about being all snuggled up inside, knowing you're ready for whatever the "snow apocalypse" throws at you outside. So, that’s my saturday morning before a snow apocalypse checklist done! I feel much more prepared and ready to enjoy the quiet calm that often comes with a big snowstorm.
