A Simple Way To Build A Cabinet Box
Cabinet boxes are one of those things that seem way more intimidating than they really are. They're also a perfect foundation piece to make, when you want to dive into DIY/woodworking, and really get the basics down. Here's a really simple way that I put together together cabinet boxes for my custom garage workshop:
1) I used 3/4' plywood (4x8), and a circular saw for the larger cuts. If you have a bigger table saw, and are comfortable using it, go for it! Mine is too small to safely handle this big of a sheet of plywood on my own. I clamped down MDF as a straight edge guide for my saw.
2) Once my pieces were cut, I created pocket holes on the underside of the board with my Kreg pocket hole jig. Each pocket hole is approximately 6 inches apart.
3) This is a good time to sand the inside area of your boards. It's much easier to sand flat surfaces before they're put together.
4) 90 degree clamps are your best friend! I used four of these to hold my box together, while screwing it all in with 1 1/4" screws.
5) Make sure you add support pieces to the back of your box. The number of support pieces is based on how tall your cabinet will be.
And that's how you put together a cabinet box! Use this same concept for all size cabinets.

When using it, make sure to set the collar on your drill bit correctly for the thickness of your material. Also, use the right type of screws – coarse-thread screws for softwoods and plywood, and fine-thread for hardwoods. And don't overtighten; you can strip the wood or crack it. Practice on scrap pieces first to get the feel for it. The Art of Assembly: Keeping it Square and Sturdy: Those 90-degree clamps? They are lifesavers! They prevent frustration and ensure your box is perfectly square, which is crucial for fitting doors, drawers, and even stacking multiple cabinets.
