Not sure what to do about your DB box space?
So… we didn’t ask our ID to quote us for DB box shelves when we did our Reno because… we forgot about it 😂 so we lived with an empty DB box for about 2 years until we finally decided to do something about it - or maybe one of us just bought so many shoes that she needed extra storage 😅
Here are the other options we considered:
1. Built in shelves from carpenter on Carousell
Very fuss free because they’re gonna measure and put everything together but also kinda expensive (we estimated it would cost maybe $200+)
2. Building our own shelves
More affordable but i don’t think we should be trusted with any kind of carpentry or work that involves power tools. We don’t want to have extra shelves and less fingers 🤣
3. Getting random planks and balancing them on suspension rods
Actually got this idea off TikTok/IG but we realised that the price isn’t too different from getting this rack + we feared that the rods would fall off 🤣
That’s how we arrived at our current solution - it’s definitely not the best looking or most aesthetic but it has served its function of providing shoe storage 😛 plus there’s doors on the DB box to hide away our mess right 🤣
We also like the flexibility of this solution - we could easily move the shoe rack to our entryway/outside our house if we needed the DB box for something else in future - vs shelves which would probably be harder to adjust or remove.
So TLDR: don’t be like us and ignore your DB box during reno - get your ID to install your shelves if you want them 😬

This smart arrangement helped maximize vertical space without overcrowding. We also got creative with the awkward side gaps by storing drawer liners and wrapping paper rolls there, turning previously wasted space into functional storage. In terms of cost, sourcing the shoe rack from Taobao during a promotional period drastically cut expenses, while magnetic hooks were an affordable find from Daiso. We even reused some holders from past projects, keeping our total spend around $20. Lastly, we appreciate the flexibility this setup provides. Should we need to repurpose the DB box in the future, the rack is easy to move elsewhere, like near the entryway. This adaptability suits changing needs in a home renovation journey, eliminating concerns about permanent fixtures. Our journey taught us that even a basic, low-cost shoe rack can meet DB box storage needs effectively — just plan ahead and consider how the solution fits your lifestyle and space constraints.
