my college advice <3
being in college for two years now has taught me a lot about what it means to be a “diet adult” and handle different situations. college is fun! it isn’t meant to be an academic hellhole. socializing and gaining learning experiences are sooooo important in school, and coming from a homebody/bed rotting master, the transition isn’t as hard as you think!
1. getting a f*cking hobby: i am the social media executive for the yoga and meditation club at my uni! it involves weekly meetings and definitely some dedication, but overall it is a low maintenance position in a very lax environment. it really only takes up around 30 minutes of my day every day, and 2 hours on event days. i love yoga and being so involved helps me wind down and refresh mentally!
2. my sanctuary: as a second-year student, i have a student apartment, and although it is tiny, i love my home very much. i decorated my room and bathroom exactly how i pleased, and with my mattress topper i get the best sleep ever! (on an important note, does anyone know how to fix an ac unit? my house is hotttttt! i live in texas so yes its 85 in november)
3. go to class (sometimes): honestly, i never attend class if i don’t have to. if class is optional and im feeling confident in the materials, i will sleep in! and that’s ok <3. it’s important to use discernment and discipline, because skipping class can become a habit, and as someone who has failed classes before, repeating them is rather embarrassing and expensive.
4. eat good & cheap: i discovered my love for cooking this past summer, and since then i have been making cheap meals. some cheap options that are tasty & can be meal prepped are: shrimp alfredo, beef quesadillas, garlic butter pasta, pesto chicken pasta, shrimp tacos, kimchi fried rice, & garlic baked potatoes. all of these meals are easy to make, require little ingredients, and are relatively cheap.
5. partyyyyy!!!: i have never been a party animal or kickback warrior, but as someone attending an hbcu, going to a couple parties during hoco is necessary. i tend to be the designated driver, but in any instance i am not, i let loose and have fun! i was a pretty sneaky kid in high school, so i knew my limits well before i stepped foot on college campus, lol.
6. go panthers!: i love my hbcu, and i have a bunch of school pride! i do take part in the rivalry between my college and another, i know all the school fight songs and chants, the alma mater, all of it! it’s really fun just to be a part of a community.
7. disappointing my parents: my parents are super conservative christians, so you can imagine their disappointment when i pop out with a new hair color, they piercing, or tattoo. i love it!! i have so much fun changing my appearance and being able to express myself with zero restraints.
Navigating college can be both exciting and overwhelming, and it’s essential to find a balance between socializing and academics. Establishing a routine is key – consider integrating hobbies that promote mental wellness, like yoga or meditation, which can be particularly beneficial during stressful periods. Creating your personal sanctuary within your student apartment can significantly enhance your college experience. Personalizing your space with decorations that inspire you will make returning home after classes more enjoyable. Combine that with a comfy mattress topper for those much-needed power naps, especially in hot climates like Texas. Understanding class attendance policies is crucial. While missing a lecture here and there might seem harmless, long-term skipping can affect your academic performance and financial investment in your education. Always prioritize classes that align with your major or interests. Food is an important aspect of college life too. Learning to cook simple, affordable meals can not only save money but also promote better health. Dishes like shrimp tacos, kimchi fried rice, or classic pasta options are quick and fulfilling choices. When it comes to social activities, don't shy away from joining friends at campus events, as they help build community and school spirit. Finally, self-expression through style choices, such as new hair colors or piercings, can be liberating in a college setting. Embrace your individuality and enjoy the freedom to explore while surrounded by a diverse community at your university.
