Cleaning Motivation When You’re LAZY

2024/12/18 Edited to

... Read moreWe've all been there... staring at a messy apartment, feeling utterly drained and unmotivated. The thought of a full clean can just feel too big, right? Especially when you're feeling lazy or have zero energy. But trust me, a clean space can do wonders for your mental state, and it doesn't have to be an overwhelming task. I've found some amazing strategies to get moving, even on my laziest days! My absolute go-to for daily cleaning and building momentum is the 'Rule of Five.' It's simple but incredibly powerful. Instead of looking at the whole 'mess' and feeling paralyzed, you just commit to spending exactly 'five minutes' on 'one thing.' Seriously, just five! The magic happens because often, once you start, that initial resistance melts away, and you find the motivation to keep going. It breaks down the mental barrier of needing to feel motivated before you start. This is especially helpful when you're feeling lazy and unmotivated and just need a push to get started. So, how do you pick that 'one thing'? Don't overthink it. Is there a pile of clothes? Spend five minutes folding. Dishes in the sink? Spend five minutes loading them. Countertop cluttered? Five minutes clearing it. The key is to truly stop after five minutes if you want to. You've honored your commitment, and that builds trust with yourself. Often, I find myself going for 10 or 15 minutes, but even if it's just five, it's still progress! This really helps when I have no energy to tackle a bigger task. But what about those days when even 'five minutes' feels like too much? Or when you need to tackle a bit more than just one small task? This is where I combine other strategies. I like to 'break it up into' smaller, manageable chunks. Instead of 'clean the entire bathroom,' I'll say 'wipe the sink for 3 minutes,' then 'tidy the counter for 2 minutes.' It's so much easier because it feels less daunting. Another trick is to put on your favorite upbeat music or a captivating podcast. It distracts your brain from the 'work' and makes the time fly by. I also set a timer – hearing it tick down makes me more efficient. Sometimes, just opening a window and letting in fresh air can be a mini-motivator in itself for 'daily cleaning'. For apartment cleaning when you're truly feeling lazy or unmotivated, focus on high-impact areas first. Clear your main surfaces (coffee table, kitchen counter) – this instantly makes the room feel tidier and less overwhelming. Also, try the 'one-touch' rule: if you pick something up, put it away immediately, rather than setting it down somewhere else. This prevents new messes from forming. Remember, the goal isn't perfection; it's progress. Be kind to yourself, celebrate those small wins, and know that even a 'five-minute' effort contributes to a cleaner, calmer home. It really helps when you feel like you have no energy to do anything. Just start somewhere, however small!
