skincare for the oily girlies!!
i’ve always struggled with my skin. i’ve tried to hide it when, in reality, i should be embracing it and helping others through it as well.
acne is NORMAL. dark spots are NORMAL. breakouts are NORMAL. bumpy skin is NORMAL.
everyone’s skin is different, mine happens to be super oily and highly acne prone. i used to have really bad hormonal acne, too. i have tried so many routines. i have seen the dermatologist loads of times. i feel comfortable sharing my routine because i’ve been there. here is what works for me.
let’s get into it:
🩵makeup melting balm
- ALWAYS double cleanse. removing your makeup is, in my opinion, one of the most important steps for an acne prone skincare routine is removing makeup. we wouldn’t want our pores to be clogged.
🩵r&f benzoyl peroxide wash
- cerave benzoyl peroxide wash works just the same, i just already had this one so when i ran out of cerave i opened this. this will help to dry out the skin and exfoliate. i used this morning and night now, but that is something to work up to as it will make the skin very dry when just starting out.
🩵glow recipe toner
- this has helped minimize my pores a TON. my skin has been so soft since i’ve started using this. it has not broken me out at all. it feels so good on my skin. this is my favorite part of my routine.
🩵la-roche posay moisturizer
- this moisturizer is by far my favorite i have ever tried. and trust me i’ve tried what feels like all of them. this moisturizer is super light and has a nice matte finish, so it doesn’t leave your skin feeling or looking oily.
🩵r&f lash serum
- i agree this one is on the pricier range, but it is SO worth it. my lashes have been so much fuller and longer since i’ve started using this. 10/10
🩵tretinoin & clindamycin (prescriptions)
- although it is not pictured, i use clindamycin in the morning. this is to help fight against the big pimples and tighten pores.
- again, not pictures, but i use tretinoin at night. this helps dry out the skin and keep away the bumps. since it is a retinoid, it also helps to fade acne scarring. LIFESAVER. the uv from the sun deactivates the properties of this product, so only use it at night. it also increases sun sensitivity so WEAR SUNSCREEN.

Managing oily skin can be a challenge, but with the right routine, you can achieve a healthier complexion. Start with a suitable makeup remover like a cleansing balm to ensure all makeup and impurities are washed away, which is crucial for preventing breakouts. Following this, using a benzoyl peroxide wash can help reduce acne by targeting bacteria and excess oil. Toners like Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow BHA Pore-Tight Toner can minimize pore appearance and provide hydration without clogging pores. It’s important to choose moisturizers that offer a matte finish, such as La Roche-Posay’s Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer, which hydrates while controlling oil. Incorporating treatments like tretinoin, a powerful retinoid, can enhance cell turnover and help in fading acne scars. Additionally, for on-the-spot treatments, clindamycin is effective for reducing inflammation and preventing future breakouts. Always remember to wear sunscreen during the day, especially when using tretinoin, as it can increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight. Listening to your skin’s needs and adjusting your routine accordingly can lead to lasting improvements.
