Today on this porch…
We honor the Mothers.
Not just the women who gave birth.
But the women who carried.
Who protected.
Who fed folks when they barely had enough themselves.
Who prayed over bedsides.
Who swept floors with scripture in their mouth.
Who hid pain behind a church hat and a smile.
Who kept families together with grease, grit, coffee, tears, and determination.
In Louisiana conjure, the mother is sacred.
Because before there was a root doctor… there was Mama.
Before the candle was dressed… Mama was already praying over that child.
Before folks learned herbs… Mama knew what tea to make.
What Psalm to read.
What spirit didn’t feel right in the room.
Down South we understand something deep.
A mother’s voice carries power.
Her blessing can lift a house.
Her grief can shake generations.
Her prayers become spiritual protection wrapped around her babies long after she leaves this earth.
Many of our first teachers in conjure were mothers and grandmothers standing over stoves stirring wisdom into the pot.
No spotlight.
No titles.
Just knowing.
And today we honor all mothers.

The grieving mothers.

May their homes know peace.
May their hands never stay empty.
May their hearts remember they are worthy of rest, love, and softness too.
And for the mothers now sitting among the ancestors…
Thank you.
For every lesson.
Every warning.
Every prayer whispered over us when we did not even understand danger was near.
