How to make press-ons look like salon nails💟
Nail at home Day 1💜
It’s Friday so… we do nails at home 💅✨
Welcome to Day 1 of my Nail at Home series — where I’ll teach you how to do our press-on nails and make them look just like salon nails.
I’ll also share my tips on how to make them reusable so you can collect your favorite sets and use them again and again 😉
It’s raining outside, I’ve got a new bottle of peach soju 🍑, and I’m about to create a soft pink-purple glitter press-on set with hand-painted roses 🌸
A cozy drink + pretty nails = the best Friday night therapy ✨
Okay, so you've seen my Friday night 'Nail at Home' setup, maybe even with a 'Peach Suju today' to set the mood, but how do we actually get those press-ons to look like you just stepped out of a high-end salon? It's all about the technique, and I'm spilling my secrets! Step 1: Flawless Prep is Non-Negotiable! This is where most people go wrong. For press-on nails to look real and last, preparation is everything. First, gently push back your cuticles (don't cut them!). Then, lightly buff the surface of your natural nails. This creates a slightly rough texture for the adhesive to grip onto. After buffing, thoroughly clean your nails with rubbing alcohol or a nail dehydrator. This removes any oils and dust, ensuring maximum adhesion. Trust me, skipping this step means your beautiful 'press on nail art' won't last! Step 2: Choosing the Right Size & Adhesive Finding the perfect size for each nail is crucial for that seamless, 'how to make press on nails look real' effect. If a press-on is too wide, it'll look obvious. If it's too small, it won't cover your natural nail properly. Sometimes, I even file down the sides of a press-on to get a custom fit. For adhesive, I swear by a good quality nail glue, but sometimes I use adhesive tabs for shorter wear or if I know I want to reuse a set quickly. Apply glue to both your natural nail and the back of the press-on for extra hold. Step 3: Application Technique for a 'Homemade' Look When applying, start by pressing the press-on nail from the cuticle line, then slowly press down towards the free edge. Hold firmly for at least 30 seconds, applying even pressure. This helps to eliminate air bubbles and ensures a strong bond. I find that applying them at a slight angle helps mimic the natural curve of your nail. Once all nails are on, you can gently file the free edge to your desired shape or length – just like a salon! This really helps with the 'press on nails homemade' aspect, making them truly yours. Step 4: Customizing & Adding 'Press On Nail Art' Want to elevate your press-ons? This is where the fun begins! While my current set has hand-painted roses, you can easily add simple nail art. Think delicate dotting, thin stripes, or even tiny rhinestones. Don't be afraid to experiment with different top coats too; a matte top coat can completely change the look of a glossy press-on. For my more intricate designs, I sometimes use a fine brush with regular gel polish, then cure it with a mini LED lamp. Products from brands like BORN PRETTY offer a fantastic range of tools and polishes for this! Step 5: Making Them Reusable (My Top Secret!) To make your favorite sets last, carefully remove them by soaking your hands in warm, soapy water with a little oil. Gently pry them off from the sides. Once removed, clean the backs of the press-ons. If you used glue, you might see some residue. I gently file this off with a fine-grit buffer or use a small drill bit (very carefully!) to smooth the surface. Store them back in their original packaging or a small storage box, ready for your next 'Nail at Home' day – perhaps on another 'Rainy Day' with more 'Peach Suju'!
