They're perfect for a weeknight meal, a casual get-together, or even a fun twist for a Valentine's Day dinner at home. I used to think making carne asada was intimidating, but after a lot of trial and error (and some amazing tips from my abuela!), I've perfected a recipe that's super straightforward and packed with flavor. The key is in the marinade – it's what makes the steak so tender and juicy. Here’s what I usually grab from the store for my mini tacos: For the Carne Asada: 1.5-2 lbs skirt steak or flank steak, thinly sliced Juice of 1 large orange (yes, trust me on this one!) 1/4 cup olive oil 3-4 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped 2 tbsp soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce (for umami!) 1 tsp cumin 1/2 tsp chili powder Salt and black pepper to taste For the Tacos: Small corn tortillas (the mini ones are essential for that perfect bite!) 1 medium onion, finely chopped (I love red onion for a pop of color and flavor) Fresh cilantro, chopped Lime wedges Your favorite salsa (pico de gallo, salsa verde, or a spicy avocado crema are my picks!)
