My Watercolor Tips
I really love watercolor for its easy set up, but it can be a bit of a beast to learn. Here are some of the tips I follow when painting!
🍋Step 1:
Practice makes perfect! Before I put a sketch down on my watercolor/mixed media paper, I tend to do a basic sketch just to get my idea solidified. Nothing to crazy, just a basic form. Then I lightly sketch the basic outlines of my subject.
🍋Step 2:
Now we get to put paint to paper! To start out I do a light wash of basic color in all the areas that will have color in them, leaving white space for any highlights. I try not to waterlog the paper. There is watercolor specific paper, but every type of paper will have a limit before it starts disintegrating.
🍋Step 3:
Continue to layer paint where you want higher saturation, while still leaving some areas white for highlights. I used a bit of color theory in this painting for my shadows on this fairies skin making them more purple-ish. Once you get the colors how you like them, wait for the painting to dry completely before going in which any pens/pencils. I used the Prismacolor Watercolor Pencils to add more white details and fur. I also used Micron Pens to give the illustration a thin outline.

Practicing these incremental steps — initial sketching, gentle washes, layering, and final detailing — builds skill and confidence. Embracing patience and observation transforms watercolor from a challenging beast into a rewarding creative experience.
