2 years on- Reno regrets!

Reflecting on my own experience living in a newly renovated BTO flat, I completely understand the frustrations related to kitchen power socket placements. Having only two sockets cramped close together can create constant inconvenience, especially for those who rely on multiple small appliances like air fryers, steamers, and coffee machines. A better approach during renovation would be to plan power sockets thoughtfully by spreading them across the kitchen counter area, giving space for simultaneous use without cluttering the countertop or relying heavily on extension cords, which can pose safety risks near cooking appliances. As for lighting, I’ve learned from trial and error that layering too many powerful light fixtures, such as multiple track lights combined with ceiling fan lights, can lead to harsh and unbalanced lighting. It’s much more comfortable and visually appealing to balance ambient and task lighting carefully rather than simply adding more lights. Sometimes the lighting that comes integrated with functional fixtures like ceiling fans suffices, allowing you to save on cost and prevent an overpowering glare. Regarding dining areas sharing a space with the living room, having a ceiling fan stationed above the sofa without covering the dining table area can lead to uncomfortable dining experiences, especially in warmer climates. Supplementing with an adequately powered wall fan aimed at the dining space creates a more pleasant environment during meals. While portable fans can help, they often aren’t enough on their own. In summary, the key to a more comfortable and practical home lies in detailed upfront planning and considering daily convenience when positioning power outlets, lighting, and ventilation. Consulting with designers about these small but impactful elements can save future regrets and improve overall living quality. Sharing these insights can hopefully help others create their ideal homes free from similar disappointments.
