GREECE TIPS *for a first timer!* 🌊⛵️🐚

Greece is a super popular destination for those wanting to spend their summer in Europe!! Rightfully so… it is absolutely gorgeous 🙌🏼 With the stunning beaches & historical cities, it’s definitely a destination you must visit!

Here are some tips to make your trip to Greece the best it can be:

1. The beaches are rocky or have pebbles instead of sand. Pack water shoes! 🪸

2. It will be CROWDED in peak season, so I would recommend visiting in May or September.

3. Photos with the blue domes in view are HARD to get… on social media, you don’t see the lines of people trying to get photos. If blue dome photos are important to you, book an airbnb where you can view the domes & take photos uninterrupted!

SWIPE through this slide for more information, and SAVE this post for your trip to Greece 🐠

Greece
2024/6/22 Edited to

... Read moreMy first time in Greece was a whirlwind, and I picked up so many extra insights that I wish I'd known beforehand! While the main article gives you a great head start, let's dive deeper into making your first Greek adventure truly seamless, even if you're planning it last minute. One of the biggest decisions for first-timers is whether to focus on island hopping or explore the mainland's historical sites. For my first trip, I blended both, spending time admiring the iconic white buildings and blue-domed churches on islands like Santorini, but also savoring Athens' ancient ruins. If you're short on time, consider choosing 1-2 islands or focusing solely on the mainland to avoid rushing. Don't feel pressured to see everything; Greece is a place to savor. Getting around Greece can be tricky. Inter-island ferries are popular, offering scenic routes, but they can be slow and sometimes delayed. For last-minute trips or if time is precious, domestic flights between major islands like from Athens to Mykonos or Santorini are a game-changer. On the mainland, renting a car gives you incredible flexibility to explore hidden gems away from the main tourist hubs, but be prepared for narrow, winding roads, especially in picturesque villages. Yes, water shoes are a must for those gorgeous rocky beaches! But don't forget a wide-brimmed hat, high SPF sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle. The Greek sun is intense! Also, a lightweight scarf or sarong is super versatile – perfect for covering up at monasteries or adding a touch of style on a breezy evening. I found myself reaching for mine constantly. A small backpack for day trips is also incredibly useful. Beyond the stunning landscapes, Greek food is an experience in itself! Don't just stick to tourist traps. Seek out local tavernas for authentic dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, and fresh seafood. Learning a few basic Greek phrases like 'kalimera' (good morning) and 'efharisto' (thank you) goes a long way in connecting with the locals. They really appreciate the effort and it enriches your experience so much. If you're planning a last-minute trip, flexibility will be your best friend. Don't be too rigid with your itinerary. Sometimes, the best deals on flights or accommodations pop up for less popular islands or off-peak travel times, even within the prime seasons. I once snagged an amazing deal on a flight just a few weeks out by being open to a different island than my initial plan. While last-minute can be exciting, try to book your first night's accommodation and main travel between islands (if applicable) as soon as you decide to go. This takes away a lot of stress. For everything else, embrace spontaneity! You might discover charming boutique hotels or hidden restaurants that weren't in any guidebook. With limited planning time, resist the urge to cram too much in. Pick one or two regions you really want to experience, like the Cyclades for their iconic blue and white architecture and windmills, or the Peloponnese for ancient history. This allows you to truly immerse yourself without feeling rushed. And remember, packing light is crucial for easy movement, especially if you're hopping between locations. Greece is truly magical, whether you plan meticulously or venture out on a whim. These extra tips, combined with the initial advice about the rocky beaches and crowds, should help you navigate your first visit like a seasoned traveler. Get ready for unforgettable views, delicious food, and incredible history!
