Would they go out of their way to help a stranger crossing the street? These small but deliberate details make characters feel authentic, whether they're heroes or villains. From my experience, detailed backstories also help maintain consistency throughout the story. When I know what my character fears, loves, or regrets, it becomes easier to predict their choices and keep their personality coherent. This builds a closer connection with the audience because the character feels real and relatable. Also, I’ve noticed that great comic universes like Marvel and DC master this by revealing layered histories for their characters over time, which keeps fans engaged and invested. So before starting the main writing or illustrating process, I spend considerable time crafting a thorough backstory, no matter how minor the character might seem. It truly enriches the narrative and enhances the overall impact of the story.
