Is accutane worth it?

is it worth it? let me tell you about my experience…

🔆 Backstory

i started getting acne in the 5th grade (i’m a junior in college now) and have been going to the dermatologist since 7th grade. i have tried tons of treatments to help, meds, face washes, birth control, diets, supplements, serums, literally everything. if it’s out on the market and i was able to get my hands on it, i was going to try it. acne can harm your mental health, i know. acne can cause others to treat you differently and can cause bullying. acne truly damaged my mental health over the years and i finally decided in october of 2023 to try accutane.

my acne wasn’t terrible like some people may experience but it got to a point where it was really bad for me and what i’ve gone through. my experience with acne may not have been the worst but it is still valid. accutane is absolutely the last case scenario but i am so glad i went forward with the treatment.

🔆 During Accutane

I did 7 months of accutane treatment, normally you only do 6 months but i needed that extra month to really get it gone. i started nov 2023 and finished june 2024.

it was rough, i wont lie to you. it was especially hard during the cold winter months when my skin normally got dry, it got way dryer because of accutane.

everyone can experience different side effects but i will tell you mine for an idea of what you could experience. i had dry skin, dry lips, dry nose, and dry scalp. i had dry eyes the first 2 weeks and i would bleed inside my nose but no full nose bleeds. i did not have any mental health side effects or muscle pains. my hair, although my scalp was dry, could go over a week without being washed. normally i have to wash my hair every 2 or 3 days but accutane hair, i love her🤌🏻

🔆 6 Months Out

i have been off accutane for 6 months and i dont even remember my life before it. i dont have the constant stress of having to hide my face or put tons of makeup on which only worsened my acne. i still sometimes will see some blemishes pop up every now and then but i let them be and they go away so fast. it’s not like before at all. i had such a problem with picking my skin but i’ve finally broke that habit. i’ve been focusing on treating my acne scars now and keeping my skin barrier protected.

i have some great skincare recommendations and tips if you need them if you’re on accutane or if you just want to keep your skin moisturized and healthy.

🔆 Bottom Line

i don’t regret doing accutane, even though people tried to scare me away from it because of the side effects. if you truly have no other options and are struggling physically and mentally with you acne, do it. if it’s affecting other aspects of your life, do it. i would make the decision to do it 100 times over.

always remember to ask your medical providers and research accutane and the side effects. everyone can get different side effects so my experience may not be the same as another but it’s worth the try if you have no other options.

if you have questions, need tips, or anything, i am here.

* those are before and after pics, i didn’t have great before pics, sorry. i was super insecure and hated taking pics of myself. *

... Read moreHey everyone! So, reading through my original post, I touched on a lot, but I know there are always more questions, especially when you're considering a big step like Accutane. Let's dive deeper into some of the things I wished I knew or got more info on, especially for those wondering about the 'purge' or what happens month-to-month! The Infamous Accutane Purge: What to Expect Many of you might search for 'isotretinoin purge' and wonder if it's going to be awful. While I didn't experience a severe 'purge' in the traditional sense, my skin definitely went through a rough patch in the first couple of months, mostly with intense dryness, like my original post mentioned. For some, it can mean an initial flare-up of acne as the medication pushes everything to the surface. It's tough, I won't lie. My advice? Be prepared mentally. Your dermatologist will likely warn you, but seeing actual results can take time. Don't get discouraged if your skin doesn't clear up instantly; it's a marathon, not a sprint. Keep up with your meds and trust the process, even when it feels like it's getting worse before it gets better. Hydration is key, both internally (drink tons of water!) and externally (gentle moisturizers). My Hair on Accutane (and Why I Loved It!) Okay, let's talk about 'accutane hair'! I mentioned how much I loved mine, and seriously, it was a game-changer. Before Accutane, I had to wash my hair every 2-3 days because it would get so oily. But on Accutane, my scalp became much drier – which meant I could go over a week without washing it! This was an unexpected perk. If you're experiencing similar dryness, embrace it! Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo when you do wash, and focus on scalp health. A lightweight hair oil for the ends can also help combat any dryness there. It's all about finding what works for your new hair texture during treatment. Preventing Accutane Relapse & Post-Accutane Care Even 6 months out, I still get the occasional 'blemishes pop up,' but it's nothing like before. For those worried about 'accutane relapse', the key is consistency with your post-Accutane skincare. My dermatologist emphasized protecting my skin barrier and using gentle products. I've focused on repairing acne scars and keeping my skin moisturized. Sun protection is *non-negotiable*—Accutane makes your skin super sensitive, and it's vital to continue protecting it afterward to prevent hyperpigmentation and maintain those amazing results. Don't go back to harsh treatments or picking your skin! Listen to your skin and continue with a simple, effective routine. This is how you maintain your 'accutane results' long-term. Is Accutane Worth It for Severe Acne? (Especially for Teens) I’ve seen a lot of discussions, especially on places like 'accutane reddit' or about 'severe acne reddit', and for 'teen boys with acne'. While my acne wasn't the absolute worst, it severely impacted my mental health. For anyone, especially teens, struggling with severe, persistent acne that affects their self-esteem and daily life, Accutane (also known as Isotretinoin) can be a really powerful option. It's not a decision to take lightly, and you absolutely need a good dermatologist to guide you through it, monitoring side effects and dosage. But based on my experience, and seeing how much my confidence has grown, if you've tried everything else and your acne is really taking a toll, it truly can be worth it. The journey is tough, but the freedom from constant breakouts and the mental relief are priceless. Always do your research, ask your doctor *everything*, and remember your feelings about your skin are valid. My Skincare Recommendations While on Accutane (and Beyond!) As promised, here are some quick tips for keeping your skin moisturized and healthy, whether you're on Accutane or just dealing with dry skin. For cleansers, stick to creamy, hydrating formulas – anything harsh will just exacerbate dryness. My go-to moisturizers were thick, unscented creams designed for sensitive skin. Don't be afraid to layer them! And for lips, I literally carried multiple lip balms everywhere; Aquaphor was a lifesaver. Hydrating serums with hyaluronic acid can also be your best friend. The goal is to support your skin barrier and reduce irritation, making the Accutane journey a bit more comfortable.
