One of the biggest pains as a dancer… 💔
As a former competitive dancer myself, I completely relate to the emotional challenge of watching your technique fade as you age. It’s one thing to train intensely in your youth, but as time passes and life priorities shift, maintaining that same level of technical precision becomes difficult. What helped me was shifting my focus from perfecting techniques to enjoying the pure joy of movement and expression. Instead of trying to hold onto the past, I started exploring new dance styles that were more forgiving on my body but equally fulfilling. Styles like contemporary or lyrical allowed me to be expressive without the pressure of rigid technique. I also found that teaching younger dancers gave me a renewed sense of purpose and kept me connected to the dance community. Another key strategy was to incorporate strength and flexibility exercises into my routine to preserve as much technical ability as possible. However, I learned to be kind to myself and recognize that losing technique doesn't mean losing identity as a dancer. The feeling described in the article—seeing yourself slowly losing technique after retirement—is common and heartbreaking, but it can also be a gateway to growth in new, exciting directions. Ultimately, embracing this transition with patience and self-compassion allowed me to keep dance in my life in a healthy, joyful way, even if my moves aren’t quite as sharp as they used to be.
