Are these the biggest sweet potatoes?
I harvested my sweet potatoes today and I may have set the record for the biggest sweet potato! 😂 Just kidding! My soil is super rich in these beds which is what makes the sweet potatoes grow so well. FYI: the variety of sweet potatoes is “Beauregard.”
After my amazing sweet potato harvest, I've been getting so many questions about how I got such biggest sweet potatoes ever! While rich soil is definitely a game-changer, I wanted to share more about the specific variety I grew and some alternative methods for those with less garden space or challenging ground: planting sweet potatoes in bags. First, let's talk about the Beauregard sweet potato. This variety is incredibly popular for a reason! It's known for its vigorous growth, high yields, and delicious, sweet orange flesh. Beauregards are also relatively adaptable to different climates, making them a fantastic choice for many home gardeners. In my experience, they truly have the potential to produce some of the largest sweet potatoes you'll ever see, especially when given the right conditions. They love full sun and consistent moisture, and a long, warm growing season really helps them bulk up. Now, for those who might not have expansive garden beds or naturally rich soil like mine, or if you're just looking for a super easy way to harvest, planting sweet potatoes in bags is an absolute game-changer. I've seen incredible results from this method, and it makes growing these beauties accessible to almost anyone. Here's why I love bag planting and how you can do it: Benefits of Bag Planting: Space-Saving: Perfect for patios, balconies, or small yards. Soil Control: You can create the perfect, rich, well-draining soil mix without amending your entire garden. This is key for those biggest sweet yields! Pest & Disease Management: It can help isolate plants from soil-borne issues. Easy Harvesting: No more digging and potentially damaging your precious tubers! Just tip the bag over when it's harvest time. How to Plant Sweet Potatoes in Bags: Choose Your Bags: Look for sturdy grow bags (fabric pots) that are at least 15-20 gallons in size. The larger the bag, the more room your sweet potatoes have to grow, leading to bigger harvests. Darker bags might heat up more, which sweet potatoes love. Prepare the Soil Mix: This is crucial. Sweet potatoes thrive in loose, well-draining, and nutrient-rich soil. I recommend a mix of good quality potting soil, compost (a generous amount for that 'rich soil' effect!), and a handful of sand or perlite for drainage. Avoid heavy garden soil that can compact easily. Planting Slips: Once your soil mix is in the bag, plant 2-3 sweet potato slips (rooted cuttings) per 15-20 gallon bag. Bury them deep enough so that several nodes are covered, as roots and tubers will form from these nodes. Watering: Sweet potatoes are thirsty, especially in containers. Water regularly, ensuring the soil stays consistently moist but never waterlogged. On hot days, you might need to water daily. Sunlight: Place your bags in a spot that receives at least 6-8 hours of full sun per day. The more sun, the better your tubers will develop. Feeding: While your compost-rich soil will provide nutrients initially, a balanced liquid fertilizer every few weeks can boost growth, especially during the peak growing season. Harvesting from bags is incredibly satisfying. Once the foliage starts to yellow and die back (usually 90-120 days after planting, depending on your climate and variety), simply tip the bag onto a tarp and marvel at your bounty. You might just end up with your own "biggest sweet potatoes ever," just like I did with my fantastic Beauregards! It's a truly rewarding way to grow your own food.
