What I bought with my 1st paycheck as a nurse 💌

Getting my first full-time paycheck as a nurse in Philly felt slightly underwhelmed —$2,200 after taxes for two weeks of 6 12s, charting chaos, and emotional highs and lows.

I remember staring at the direct deposit, happy I finally got my first check… but also a little underwhelmed. After rent, groceries, and student loans, there wasn’t much left.

Still, I treated myself to a night out for dinner & drinks with my besties and some new lulu lemon pieces—because I earned it.

For me, that paycheck meant independence, sacrifice, and the start of a new chapter.

How did you feel after your first “real” check—and what did you spend it on? ✨

The average salary for new nurses varies based on location and experience, so understanding budgeting basics is crucial. After your first check, consider creating a budget that accounts for essentials like rent, student loans, and groceries. Treating yourself, as I did with a dinner and new clothing, is important, but learning to save is also essential for financial stability. Many nurses also explore side hustles or overtime to enhance their income, which can boost financial flexibility. Additionally, joining communities of healthcare professionals can provide support and resources for managing personal finances in this demanding field. What did you do after getting your first paycheck? Share your experiences and tips with fellow nurses!

Honey, I work 40 hours a week and take home for 2 weeks is only $1,420.76. Hear me when I say that your $2,200 is well above average income for 1 person. I live in Florida btw. you make $30.55 per hour. I make $17.76 an hour. (after tax income) I haven't even calculated what the 540 a month I will pay for my benifits will make my take home pay. Not including ANY retirement anything.
