Dream: Owning my own med spa. Injecting Botox and filler in a cute space that I designed. A flexible schedule, good money, and patients who actually want to be there.
Reality: Step-down RN. I’m charting at 6 a.m. while trying not to fall asleep. I’m cleaning up messes, juggling 2-3 high-acuity patients, and getting yelled at because someone doesn’t want to take their meds. I barely have time to pee, let alone think about syringes filled with anything other than heparin lol.
I didn’t give up on the dream — it’s coming. Right now I’m surviving, getting my experience, and figuring out how to make that next move towards my goals. 🎀💉✨

... Read moreMany nurses resonate deeply with Brianna Kennedy's candid reflection on the stark contrast between her professional dreams and daily reality. It's a sentiment echoed across the healthcare community: the passion that draws you to nursing often differs from the demanding day-to-day work. For Brianna Kennedy, BSN, RN, her ultimate vision involves the creative and client-focused world of aesthetic nursing, specifically owning a med spa where she can specialize in Botulinum Toxins & Dermal Fillers, a field she's actively pursuing, as evidenced by her certificate dated September 28, 2024.
Her dream isn't just about the flexible schedule or good money; it’s about crafting a personalized, beautiful space where patients genuinely want to be, focusing on enhancing natural beauty rather than managing acute crises. This desire to transition from the high-stress environment of a step-down RN, dealing with critical care, charting at dawn, and handling complex patient needs, to a more specialized, elective field is a common aspiration for many medical professionals seeking a different kind of fulfillment.
Life as a step-down RN, as Brianna vividly describes, is a testament to resilience. It involves the constant vigilance of monitoring patients, managing medication, and performing essential tasks like handling blood sample tubes and urine sample containers – all while wearing the iconic N95 mask and gloves. It's a role that demands quick thinking, immense empathy, and physical stamina, often leaving little time for personal breaks, let alone dreaming of future endeavors. Yet, it's precisely this rigorous experience that forms the bedrock of a successful nursing career, providing invaluable skills in patient assessment, critical thinking, and crisis management that are transferable to any specialty.
For those, like Brianna Kennedy, who are navigating this dual existence, the journey from current reality to dream career is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires strategic planning, continuous education, and unwavering determination. Building experience in diverse nursing settings, like her current role, is crucial. It hones clinical judgment and professionalism. Simultaneously, actively pursuing certifications in areas like Botulinum Toxins & Dermal Fillers, networking with professionals in the aesthetic field, and even starting to draft a business plan for a future med spa are concrete steps. Every difficult shift and every patient interaction, even the challenging ones, contribute to the foundational expertise that will ultimately empower Brianna to realize her vision. Her journey is a powerful reminder that while the present may be tough, the future she's building is well within reach.
Big mood. Gotta hustle for that dream, even if it's slow. 😴
