... Read moreHey everyone! ๐ So glad you're here to check out my Artfight entry! It's been a hot minute since I posted, but I was super excited to share this piece from this year's Artfight, where I was proudly part of Team Fossils! ๐ฆด
This character, named Everglade (belonging to the amazing @Saccharinesongs), was such a joy to draw. I really wanted to capture their essence as a cat-like creature perfectly at home in a lush, watery environment. When designing them, I envisioned a dark brown and light brown striped cat-like character, with striking blue eyes that really pop against their fur. I loved giving them curly fur, which I think adds to their natural, wild look, almost like the moss and plants in a real everglade.
To really bring out that 'Everglade theme,' I adorned them with delicate green vines and white flowers, making them feel like a living part of the forest foliage. The setting was crucial too โ I imagined them sitting peacefully in a shallow, green pond, surrounded by lily pads. Itโs not every day you see a cat, or a cat-like character, so comfortable in water, right? Thatโs what makes character design so exciting โ you get to play with ideas and create something unique!
Speaking of cats in water, I know some of you might be curious about cartoon cats in aquatic settings, maybe even searching for 'cat scuba cartoon' type art! While Everglade isn't exactly wearing scuba gear, the idea behind this piece definitely plays with the charm of feline characters interacting with water. It's fascinating how artists imagine creatures in environments they wouldn't naturally inhabit. For Everglade, it was about showing a cat-like creature utterly serene and connected to their watery home. I think it adds a whimsical touch to see a cat character embracing the pond life, like a little guardian of their own mini-ecosystem!
When you're designing characters, especially for platforms like Artfight or just for fun, thinking about their environment is key. How do their colors, fur patterns, and even accessories (like my vines and flowers!) reflect their surroundings? For Everglade, the greens and browns echo the forest, and the blue eyes reflect the water. Creating this kind of visual harmony makes the character feel more alive and believable, even in a fantastical cartoon style.
I often get asked about my process, and for Everglade, it started with sketching out poses that conveyed tranquility and a sense of belonging in the pond. Then came the colors โ picking shades that felt vibrant but also natural to an Everglade setting. The curly fur was a fun challenge, giving texture and personality. Itโs all about layering details to build up a rich character.
Artfight is such a fantastic event for pushing your creative boundaries and trying new things. It was a blast attacking and getting attacked, and seeing all the incredible interpretations of characters. If you're into character design or just love drawing animals, I highly recommend checking it out next year! You never know what amazing aquatic-themed felines or other creatures you'll get to draw. Don't be afraid to put your own spin on things โ that's where the magic happens!
