What is Autistic masking? 🌸

1/25 Edited to

... Read moreAutistic masking is a complex and often misunderstood behavior where individuals with autism hide or camouflage their autistic traits. From my experience and observations, this masking is usually not a conscious choice but rather an automatic response developed over time. Many people learn to mask as a way to cope with social expectations or to avoid negative reactions from others, such as criticism or punishment. Masking can involve suppressing natural behaviors like stimming, avoiding eye contact, or mimicking social cues that don’t come naturally. While it might help in blending in and appearing 'normal' in social settings, this constant effort can lead to significant emotional and physical exhaustion. I've found that long-term masking can cause burnout, anxiety, and even deepen feelings of isolation because individuals might feel disconnected from their true selves. Importantly, the need for acceptance plays a crucial role in why many autistic people mask. Safety in social environments often depends on how well they can conceal their differences. Unfortunately, this can delay diagnosis and access to support, as masked individuals might not meet typical behavioral criteria during assessments. Raising awareness about autistic masking helps in fostering more inclusive environments where people feel safe to be themselves without pressure to hide. Sharing personal experiences, like feeling drained after social interactions or struggling with identity, can encourage others to recognize the signs and seek understanding. For anyone navigating masking, it’s vital to find supportive communities and practices that allow authentic expression and reduce the health costs associated with hiding who they really are.

A lot of autistic traits in women don’t look like what people expect. They often get reframed as personality quirks, being sensitive, perfectionistic, introverted, anxious, or “just burned out.” When you’re good at masking, the impact stays mostly internal, so it’s easy for these signs to go unnot

Masking can feel like protection, a way to blend in, avoid judgement, and stay “professional.” But over time, it comes at a cost. Every moment spent monitoring your tone, body language, or reactions drains your energy. Eventually, the exhaustion catches up, and burnout follows. It’s not about dropp

Autistic girl guide to navigating theme parks
One of my special interests is theme parks. I never got to go to any of the big ones as a kid, but I remember going to smaller theme parks on road trips with my family. Sometime after my spouse proposed, I became even more interested, and fell in love with Disneyland, Disney World and Universal

Workbook Review: Autistic Burnout 🥵
This workbook has truly been such a validating read for me. It breaks down masking, spoon theory, sensory overwhelm, and nervous system regulation that makes everything feel “human” instead of clinically overwhelming. What I appreciate most is how deeply relatable it is. There were so many mome

Autism and high masking
I used to think I was too much. Too loud. Too emotional. Too intense. So I got really good at shrinking—into quiet smiles, polite nods, and being “easy to be around.” But masking isn’t peace. It’s self-abandonment in slow motion. Now? I choose real. Even when it’s messy. Even when it’s to

Identifying high masking autism
I often wonder how my autism was missed as a child. I stimmed repeatedly, was quiet and a bit standoffish, and struggled to understand communication. Although it is obvious to me now, it clearly was not as obvious to my pediatrician in the 90s. I may have had what I think as stereotypical autistic
