Autism in girls doesn’t look like what you think

1/25 Edited to

... Read moreAs someone familiar with the complexities of autism, especially among females, I can share how different the experience truly is compared to common stereotypes. Girls with autism often develop coping mechanisms early on. They tend to observe and mimic social behaviors, which helps them blend in, but often at the cost of masking their true feelings and challenges. This masking can be so extensive that even close friends and family might fail to recognize their struggles. In my own experience and through conversations with others, I've noticed that many autistic girls suffer from feelings of anxiety and exhaustion that stem from trying to fit social expectations. What looks like perfectionism or shyness on the surface can actually be a deep struggle to navigate overwhelming social situations. Contrary to the misconception that they 'act autistic,' many girls experience internal battles that are invisible but very real. Late diagnosis is far too common because autism in girls doesn’t always align with traditional signs often depicted in boys. This delay can lead to feelings of isolation and confusion, as they sense they are different but don't have the framework or support to understand why. Importantly, being diagnosed later in life doesn’t mean they were 'less autistic'; it means that their unique experiences were simply misunderstood. If you suspect a girl or woman in your life may be autistic, it’s crucial to approach with empathy and an open mind. Encourage honest conversations about how they experience the world and acknowledge the exhaustion masking causes. Recognizing and validating these experiences can be life-changing and help unmask their genuine selves, offering much-needed relief and understanding.

Autism diagnosis in girls
Girls are still less often diagnosed with autism than boys. This made sense back in the day when we had less information, but I'm starting to wonder if it's not just the things in these slides anymore. I think it might have something to do with women and girls having less research done f

Autism, a different kind of brilliance
Autism isn’t about being broken. It’s about a different way of processing the world. 💡 Many autistic people lead with logic first in a society that often leads with emotion first. This doesn’t mean we lack emotion — it means we experience it differently. 🌀 When emotions run too strong, logi
