Autism diagnosis in girls

Girls are still less often diagnosed with autism than boys. This made sense back in the day when we had less information, but I'm starting to wonder if it's not just the things in these slides anymore.

I think it might have something to do with women and girls having less research done for them in general.. What are your thoughts?

... Read moreIt's true, the journey to an autism diagnosis for girls and women often feels like navigating a maze, especially when early research focused so heavily on male presentations. Many of us have felt that something was 'off,' but couldn't quite put our finger on it, often being misdiagnosed with anxiety or depression first. This common experience highlights why understanding the unique signs of 'tism' in females is so crucial. One of the biggest reasons signs of autism in females are missed is the phenomenon of 'masking.' This isn't just about trying to fit in; it's an exhausting, often subconscious effort to suppress autistic traits and mimic neurotypical social behaviors. I've heard countless stories, and experienced myself, how this can manifest: forcing eye contact even when uncomfortable, scripting conversations, practicing facial expressions in the mirror, or meticulously observing others to learn social cues. This intense effort can make us appear 'socially adept' on the surface, while internally, we're completely drained and overwhelmed. It's a huge factor in why 'tism diagnosis' can be so delayed for us. Then there are the 'quiet stims' – those less noticeable self-regulatory behaviors that are often dismissed or even praised. Beyond hair pulling and twirling or skin picking, which the images highlighted, these can include subtle fidgeting under a table, repetitive tapping of a foot, or even internal stims like counting, repeating phrases in our heads, or engaging in elaborate fantasy worlds. These aren't disruptive in a classroom or workplace, so they go unnoticed, unlike the more overt stims often seen in boys. Furthermore, sensory sensitivities often present differently. While some might have strong aversions to loud noises or bright lights, others might experience more nuanced, yet equally debilitating, sensitivities to certain fabric textures, food temperatures, or even specific smells. We might internalize this discomfort rather than express it outwardly, leading to meltdowns at home rather than in public. These subtle sensory differences are important symptoms of autism in females to recognize. Socially, autistic girls might desperately desire friendships but struggle with the 'unwritten rules' of interaction – understanding sarcasm, interpreting body language, or engaging in reciprocal conversation. Our 'special interests' might also be different, focusing on niche topics like specific literary genres, animals, or historical figures, which can sometimes make it harder to connect with peers who have more mainstream interests. If you're recognizing these signs of 'tism' in yourself or a loved one, remember that a diagnosis can be incredibly validating. It's about understanding yourself better. Seek out diagnosticians who have experience with autism in females. Keep a detailed journal of your experiences, observations, and how these symptoms impact your daily life. Self-advocacy is key in this process. You're not alone in this journey, and understanding these unique presentations is the first step towards getting the support you deserve.

Identifying high masking autism
I often wonder how my autism was missed as a child. I stimmed repeatedly, was quiet and a bit standoffish, and struggled to understand communication. Although it is obvious to me now, it clearly was not as obvious to my pediatrician in the 90s. I may have had what I think as stereotypical autistic
