China says the U.S. seizure of a Russian-flagged oil tanker in international waters “severely violated international law” and infringes on the United Nations Charter and maritime norms.
Beijing’s foreign ministry says the arbitrary detention of foreign vessels on the high seas undermines global security and sets a dangerous precedent.
China also strongly opposes unilateral sanctions not backed by the UN Security Council and says such actions harm other countries’ sovereignty and legal rights.
The protest comes after U.S. forces seized the Marinera tanker in the North Atlantic during efforts to enforce sanctions on Venezuelan oil exports.
Russia has likewise condemned the interception as illegal “piracy,” further escalating tensions between Washington and Moscow.
China calls on all parties to respect international law, the UN Charter and freedom of navigation.
