Chinese President Xi Jinping replies to a letter from teachers and students of a U.S. youth education exchange delegation, saying he is pleased they had a meaningful visit to China and developed strong interest in Chinese culture.

Xi highlights that over 40,000 young Americans have participated in China’s “50,000 in Five Years” initiative, which aims to deepen people-to-people ties between China and the United States.

He says the hope for China-U.S. relations lies with the people and the future depends on youth.

Xi calls on more American students and teachers to join exchange programs to build lasting friendship and mutual understanding.

He says such exchanges are a bridge for cooperation and help strengthen ties between the two countries.

Xi expresses hope that youth will be new envoys of friendship and contribute to better bilateral relations in the years ahead.

... Read moreAs someone who has closely followed international education exchanges, I find China's "50,000 in Five Years" initiative particularly impactful. It not only opens doors for American students and teachers to experience China’s rich culture but also encourages lifelong friendships and deeper appreciation between the two nations. Participating in such programs often leads to personal growth by challenging individuals to gain new perspectives and overcome cultural barriers. Youth exchange programs also help build critical soft skills like communication, adaptability, and empathy, which are invaluable in today’s globalized world. Looking beyond official diplomacy, these people-to-people ties established through exchanges contribute to more grounded, sincere cooperation. As both countries invest in nurturing youth ambassadors, the hope is to see more collaborative projects and innovative ideas emerge from these cultural bridges. This makes me optimistic about the future of U.S.-China relations as these young envoys carry the torch forward.
