The Last Prince - The Legend of the Tiger and the Light Sergeant
When the political disappearance was remembered through the legend of the Sming Tiger, "The Last Prince," by artist Alan Oei.
Alan Oei, an artist who works on the joints of Southeast Asian vernacular history, politics, memory, and mythology, he uses art, both painting and spatial art, in questioning historical narratives, and political power, aimed at exploring imperfect narratives and sounds that have been silenced by contemporary society.
The Last Prince exhibition begins with the true story of Sergeant Light (Sao Kya Seng), the last prince of the Taiwanese state of Sipur, who was arrested and disappeared after the 1962 coup, whose fate was never officially revealed. This disappearance became a historical trauma, and a depiction of the structural violence the state perpetrated against minorities. The story is overlaid with the legend of the Sming Tiger (suea saming / weretiger). The Taiwanese believe that Sergeant Light did not die during his detention, but managed to escape arrest, and fled into the wild, before becoming a Sming Tiger.
Artists convey historical narratives and myths through artwork with dull tones, strong glow, and a calm atmosphere; the figures of man and tiger appear between the world of truth and belief; the tiger in The Last Prince is therefore not a representation of ferocity, if only a political body, a representation of those who have been made to disappear, but never forgotten.

จากประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวในการเยี่ยมนิทรรศการ "The Last Prince" พบว่าเป็นงานศิลปะที่สะท้อนความลึกซึ้งทางประวัติศาสตร์และการเมือง ผ่านการผสมผสานเรื่องเล่าทางตำนานเสือสมิงซึ่งเป็นความเชื่อพื้นถิ่นของชาวไทใหญ่เข้ากับเหตุการณ์การหายสาบสูญของเจ้าจ่าแสงอย่างทรงพลัง ความรู้สึกเมื่อได้ชมงานมีความแตกต่างจากนิทรรศการศิลปะทั่วไป เพราะสีสันที่ใช้และการจัดวางองค์ประกอบ ถ่ายทอดบรรยากาศที่หม่นมัวและครุ่นคิด พร้อมแสงและเงาที่เน้นความเงียบสงบ และยังแฝงความเศร้าและความลึกลับในเวลาเดียวกัน โดยเฉพาะการที่ศิลปินใช้ภาพเสือสมิงเป็นสัญลักษณ์ซึ่งไม่ใช่แค่สัตว์ดุร้ายธรรมดา แต่เป็นตัวแทนของผู้ถูกลบเลือน หรือผู้ที่ "หายไปแต่ไม่ถูกลืม" ทำให้เราฉุกคิดถึงความสูญเสียและผลกระทบทางการเมืองที่ยาวนานต่อกลุ่มชนและวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่น ในฐานะผู้ที่สนใจในประวัติศาสตร์การเมืองและตำนานพื้นบ้าน ผมแนะนำว่าการไปชมงานนี้จะได้เห็นมุมมองลึกซึ้งที่ไม่เคยถูกนำเสนอในแหล่งข้อมูลทั่วไป นอกจากจะได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากงานศิลปะแล้ว ยังช่วยเปิดโลกทัศน์เกี่ยวกับสังคมที่ถูกปกปิดและเรื่องเล่าที่ถูกเก็บงำในประวัติศาสตร์ การจัดแสดงที่ Cartel Art Space ตั้งอยู่ในซอยนราธิวาส 22 ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในโซนศิลปะที่มีความน่าสนใจในกรุงเทพฯ จึงเหมาะกับผู้ที่อยากสัมผัสทั้งศิลปะร่วมสมัยและเรื่องราวภายในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ การเยี่ยมชมควรเตรียมเวลาประมาณ 1-2 ชั่วโมง เพื่อให้สามารถซึมซับรายละเอียดของงานและเรื่องราวของเจ้าจ่าแสงได้อย่างเต็มที่ นอกจากนี้ยังมีความรู้สึกเชื่อมโยงกับอดีตผ่านความคิดและความเชื่อที่ซ่อนอยู่ในงานแต่ละชิ้น โดยรวม นิทรรศการนี้ไม่ได้เป็นเพียงแค่การนำเสนอประวัติศาสตร์ แต่ยังเป็นการทบทวนและตั้งคำถามเกี่ยวกับการลบเลือนเรื่องราวของชนกลุ่มน้อย และวิธีที่ศิลปะสามารถเป็นเครื่องมือในการรักษาความทรงจำและความเป็นธรรมในสังคมร่วมสมัย
