Vernacular Objects
When old tires, straw, acrylic and old chairs became the secret language of youth we never read, "Vernacular Objects," an exhibition that invited us to read the city through ordinary objects, selected by Mark Grunant.
"Vernacular Objects," an exhibition that invites the audience to look at youth through small items that result from the solution of everyday problems, objects that are not designed for beauty, if they are born of the "necessity" and "thoughtfulness" of people, in the eyes of the curator, these objects are not just things, if they are vernacular dialects that reflect the way of thinking, the rhythm of life, and the value system of the neighborhood, when they are placed in the art space, they open a new dialogue between art, city and everyday life.
In this work are shown a group of ready-made objects (readymades) gathered from the area around the Bangkok Kunsthalle. Objects which originally served as informal parking reservation devices. Whether old tires were pressed flat and tied with ropes from a motorcycle garage, curved acrylic plates from sign-making shops near the roundabout, or pieces of domestic goods that were assembled into ad hoc structures. These objects in the original context served to quietly organize the space, supporting people's livelihoods almost unobserved, but when they were placed in the exhibition space, they turned out to be both aesthetic objects, and anthropological documents documenting the relationship between humans, cities, and survival.
Throughout the course of the exhibit, the composition of the object may be constantly modified, circulated, or rearranged, reflecting the concept of "non-stop language," in which every placement is a new sentence, and every object relationship is a new set of city meanings.
"Vernacular Objects" invites us to look back at what was once overlooked, as a tool for reading cities and understanding youth neighborhoods through its own specific language, and to see that the identity of a neighborhood does not appear only in architecture or cultural heritage, if it is also embedded in small structures born out of the hands of ordinary people.

หลายคนถามว่า “vernacular คืออะไร” เพราะเจอคำนี้ในชื่องาน Vernacular Objects แล้วงงเหมือนกัน ตอนแรกเราก็คิดว่าเป็นศัพท์เฉพาะสายอาร์ต แต่พอเดินดูงานถึงเริ่มจับทางได้ชัดขึ้น vernacular (เวอร์แนคคิวลาร์) ถ้าแปลแบบเข้าใจง่าย ๆ คือ “ภาษาถิ่น/ของพื้นถิ่น” หรือสิ่งที่เกิดจากวิถีชีวิตจริงของคนในพื้นที่ ไม่ได้ถูกออกแบบให้สวยหรือเป็นทางการตั้งแต่แรก แต่ค่อย ๆ เกิดจากความจำเป็น ความคุ้นมือ และการแก้ปัญหาเฉพาะหน้า พอมาอยู่ในโลกศิลปะ คำนี้เลยไม่ได้หมายถึงภาษาอย่างเดียว แต่หมายถึง “รูปแบบและความคิด” ที่คนธรรมดาใช้จัดการชีวิตประจำวันด้วย ในนิทรรศการ Vernacular Objects เรารู้สึกว่าสิ่งที่น่าสนใจคือการเอา “ของธรรมดามาก ๆ” มาทำให้เราอ่านเมืองได้ เช่น ลังพลาสติกสีแดง-เขียวที่ถูกผูกรวมกัน กรวยจราจร โครงสร้างไม้ชั่วคราว ท่อ PVC สีฟ้า แผ่นอะคริลิกดัดโค้ง หรือแม้แต่ของที่ดูคล้ายอุปกรณ์จองที่จอดรถแบบไม่เป็นทางการ พอวางในพื้นที่จัดแสดงแบบดิบ ๆ ของ Bangkok Kunsthalle มันกลายเป็นเหมือนประโยคหนึ่งของเมืองที่เรามองข้ามมาตลอด ถ้าจะตีความแบบคนดูงานทั่วไป (แบบเรา) “vernacular objects” คือวัตถุที่เป็นหลักฐานว่าเมืองทำงานยังไงเมื่อไม่มีคู่มือ—คนใช้ของที่มีอยู่รอบตัวมาจัดระเบียบพื้นที่ ต่อรองการใช้ถนน/ซอย หรือสร้างระบบเล็ก ๆ ให้ชีวิตไหลลื่นขึ้น มันไม่ใช่ดีไซน์ที่เนี๊ยบ แต่เป็นดีไซน์ที่ฉลาดและจริง ทริคที่ทำให้ดูงานสนุกขึ้น: ลองเดินแล้วถามตัวเอง 3 ข้อ 1) ของชิ้นนี้เดิมที “ใช้ทำอะไร” ในถนนจริง ๆ? (เช่น กันที่ จองที่จอด บอกแนวเขต) 2) ทำไมต้องเป็นวัสดุนี้—ทำไมต้องลังพลาสติก/ท่อ PVC/เศษไม้? (คำตอบมักเกี่ยวกับหาได้ง่าย ราคาถูก ซ่อมได้) 3) พอมันถูกย้ายมาอยู่ในแกลเลอรี ความหมายเปลี่ยนยังไง? จากของใช้ กลายเป็นเรื่องเล่าเกี่ยวกับเยาวราชและการเอาตัวรอดในเมือง อีกอย่างที่ชอบคือแนวคิด “ภาษาที่ไม่หยุดนิ่ง” เพราะองค์ประกอบในงานมีสิทธิ์ปรับเปลี่ยนได้ ทำให้เรารู้สึกว่าความหมายของเมืองก็ไม่เคยนิ่งเหมือนกัน—วันนี้เป็นแบบนี้ พรุ่งนี้คนก็หาทางใหม่ ปรับของใหม่ แล้วเมืองก็เขียนประโยคใหม่ตลอดเวลา ใครกำลังหานิทรรศการศิลปะในกรุงเทพฯ ที่เข้าฟรีและได้มุมมองใหม่ ๆ ต่อเยาวราช งานนี้คุ้มมาก แนะนำเผื่อเวลาเดินดูช้า ๆ แล้วลองสังเกตรายละเอียดวัสดุแต่ละชิ้น (รอยผูก รอยต่อ รอยสึก) เพราะมันคือ “สำเนียง” ของพื้นที่นั้นจริง ๆ สถานที่: Bangkok Kunsthalle ชั้น 1 ช่วงจัดแสดง: วันนี้ – 15 มีนาคม 2569 เวลา: พุธ–อาทิตย์ 14.00–20.00 น.
