Why I Stopped Digital Painting for Myself

As I spent more time immersed in digital painting, I began to notice my eyes growing increasingly tired, accompanied by an irritating strain that never quite seemed to ease. This physical discomfort was a constant reminder that I was staring into a screen, immersed in a virtual space that felt separate from the organic world I was drawn to as an artist. What began as a subtle annoyance eventually became an underlying reason to step back and rethink my relationship with digital art.

Beyond the physical strain, I also started to question the very nature of digital art. For me, it felt like creating within a virtual reality—something inherently disconnected from the tangible world around me. I realized that I lacked an authentic, emotional connection with my digital pieces. Unlike traditional media, where each brushstroke, each mark, leaves a physical imprint and carries a part of my energy, digital art felt somehow less real, less personal. That’s not to say digital art can’t be expressive or moving; it absolutely can. However, I found that my digital creations leaned more on logic than emotion, driven by a calculated process rather than the intuitive, heart-led approach I craved.

There was also an element of dependence on digital tools that began to worry me. The streamlined processes and accessible features made it easy to follow a path of least resistance, allowing me to slip into a sense of inertia. I realized I was following routines and shortcuts, rather than engaging with the genuine passion that usually fuels my creativity. My work felt increasingly controlled by the technology itself, rather than by my own inspirations and impulses.

Perhaps the most disheartening aspect was the overwhelming sense of perfection in digital art. The tools allowed for polish and precision beyond what I could ever achieve with traditional materials. But this perfection, I realized, came at a cost. My digital pieces felt overly refined, lacking the raw spontaneity and serendipitous moments that often bring a piece to life. When working with physical media, there’s an element of unpredictability—ink might spread in an unexpected way, a brushstroke may be bolder than planned—that lends character and soul to the art. Digital perfection, by contrast, left me yearning for something less polished, something more authentically flawed.

This shift in perspective led me to step away from digital painting, at least for myself, and return to media that offer me a more grounded, personal connection. This is my relationship with art—a journey toward what feels real and alive to me.

I hope sharing this inspires you, too, to explore what truly resonates with you in your creative journey.

... Read moreIn today’s digital age, artists often grapple with the impact of technology on their creativity and emotional expression. The rise of digital art tools has revolutionized the way we create, giving us access to features that streamline processes and enhance precision. However, many artists, like the author of this article, find these advancements may come at a cost. Physical discomfort, stemming from prolonged screen time, is a common issue faced by digital artists. Eye strain and fatigue can detract from the joy of creating, urging artists to reconsider their relationship with digital tools. Additionally, the convenience of digital platforms might unintentionally foster a reliance on shortcuts, possibly dulling the spontaneity integral to authentic artistic expression. Traditional mediums provide unique sensibilities that can often evoke deeper emotional connections. The unpredictability of physical materials can lead to accidental discoveries, producing artworks rich in character and spontaneity. The serendipitous nature of painting with traditional tools can imbue pieces with authenticity, resonating with both the artist and the viewer on a more profound level. For those looking to reconnect with their creativity, exploring physical art forms may lead to renewed inspiration. By rediscovering traditional techniques such as watercolor, oil, or charcoal, artists can engage with the medium in a way that digital often doesn’t allow. Each brushstroke becomes a tangible, emotional experience rather than simply a calculated decision. Ultimately, the decision to step back from digital art is not just about preference; it’s about fostering a deeper connection with one’s art, one's emotions, and the world around. Every artist’s journey is uniquely personal, and it’s vital to find what resonates most authentically with one's creative spirit.

Listening to sad music- I love sad music, I think it’s beautiful and relatable. But the reality is it does not help in any way shape or form. It puts you in a negative mindset and you end up in a never ending loop. You’re sad so you listen to sad music, which makes you more sad. And so it repeats.
