Because the Subcommittee on the Coordination of the Conservation of Thai Elephants, together with the Committee on National Identity, the Prime Minister's Secretariat, foresaw the importance of the conservation of elephants, presented a resolution to the Congress on May 26, 1998. The Council of Ministers later agreed that March 13 of each year be Thai Elephant Day and announced the Prime Minister's Office on May 29, 1998 in the Gazette on June 18, 1998.
In addition to the importance of Thai elephants to their culture, elephants are also important to the forest ecosystems in Thailand. Elephants are large animals that provide shade for other Umbrella species that live in the same area. Because of the foraging behavior of elephants that walk for a long distance, they help bring the seeds that elephants eat to a place away from the mother tree. The path that elephants walk through will provide a way for other animals to walk their livelihoods. At the same time, the branches that elephants lean on during their livelihoods will provide food for small animals that cannot reach high livelihoods. Elephant manure is also fertilizer for plants and a source of food and food. It is important for many wild insects.

ในฐานะผู้ที่ติดตามและใส่ใจเรื่องอนุรักษ์สัตว์ป่าอย่างช้างไทยมาโดยตลอด วันช้างไทยในวันที่ 13 มีนาคมทุกปี ถือเป็นโอกาสพิเศษที่เราได้สะท้อนถึงความสำคัญของช้างไทยทั้งในเชิงวัฒนธรรมและระบบนิเวศน์ ผมมีโอกาสไปร่วมงานวันช้างไทยที่จัดขึ้นในปี 2569 ที่โรงเรียนราชประชานุเคราะห์ 48 จังหวัดจันทบุรี ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในกิจกรรมที่รวมกลุ่มคนต่างวัย ทั้งเยาวชน เจ้าหน้าที่ และชุมชน เพื่อร่วมสร้างแรงบันดาลใจในการอนุรักษ์ช้าง นอกจากการจัดพิธีทำบุญอุทิศส่วนกุศลแก่ช้างป่าและชุมชนที่ได้รับผลกระทบแล้ว สิ่งที่สะดุดตาคือกิจกรรมการประกวดวาดภาพธีม "วันช้างไทย" ที่ช่วยปลูกฝังและกระตุ้นความรับผิดชอบของเยาวชนในเรื่องการอนุรักษ์อย่างลึกซึ้ง นอกจากนี้ อีกไฮไลท์หนึ่งที่ผมประทับใจคือการให้กำลังใจเจ้าหน้าที่ด่านหน้าที่ทำงานหนักเพื่อผลักดันช้างป่าและจัดการความขัดแย้งระหว่างคนกับช้าง ผ่านการมอบถุงยังชีพและเงินเยียวยา สิ่งนี้แสดงให้เห็นถึงความร่วมมืออย่างเป็นรูปธรรมระหว่างภาครัฐและชุมชนในภารกิจรักษาช้างไทยให้อยู่คู่กับธรรมชาติได้อย่างยั่งยืน ทางด้านระบบนิเวศ ผมได้เรียนรู้ว่าช้างไม่ได้เป็นเพียงสัตว์ใหญ่ที่น่าตื่นตาตื่นใจเท่านั้น แต่ยังมีบทบาทสำคัญเป็น umbrella species ซึ่งหมายความว่าการดูแลช้างก็ยังช่วยดูแลสายพันธุ์อื่นและป่าไม้ในวงกว้างด้วย เช่นการพาเมล็ดพันธุ์พืชกระจายไปยังที่ต่าง ๆ สร้างทางเดินใหม่ให้สัตว์อื่น ๆ รวมถึงกิ่งไม้และมูลช้างที่มีประโยชน์ต่อลักษณะระบบนิเวศนี้ ท้ายสุด ผมอยากเชิญชวนทุกคนให้ร่วมกันตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของวันช้างไทย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการศึกษาหาความรู้ การเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมอนุรักษ์ หรือการเผยแพร่ความรู้ในสังคม เพื่อให้ช้างไทยและป่าของเราได้อยู่ร่วมกันอย่างสมดุลและยั่งยืนในอนาคต
