Chlorinated water often strips hair of its natural oils, but ironically, it can also stimulate the scalp to produce excess oil as a defense mechanism. This creates a tricky balance especially for folks with different hair types such as curly or straight hair. Over time, I've learned that the key is not to over-wash or rely solely on harsh clarifying shampoos, as that can lead to heat damage and dryness, especially for curly hair. Instead, integrating a regular wash day routine that gently cleanses the scalp without stripping moisture is essential. Using sulfate-free shampoos formulated for swimmers helps remove chlorine buildup while maintaining natural oils. For curly hair, moisturizing treatments like deep conditioners or hair masks are important after swimming to restore hydration and reduce damage. For straight hair, lightweight leave-in conditioners can help maintain scalp balance. Another tip is to rinse your hair with fresh water immediately after swimming to reduce chlorine exposure and its impact on scalp oiliness. Wearing a swim cap can also minimize direct contact with pool water. Overall, managing an oily scalp as a full-time swimmer requires a tailored haircare approach, balancing cleansing with moisture retention while protecting the hair from heat damage and chlorine exposure.
