DIY Rose Water
This is the simplest thing to make at home: rose water. Note: this is not the same as rose hydrosol is typically reffered to as rose water. It's made during steam distillation, and it has more benefits than this recipe. My skin absolutely loves this rose water, so I make sure to utilize the free roses outside and have fresh rose water 4-5 months out of the year!
some recipes say just collect as many petals as you want, then fully cover with water. I typically do a 1:1 ratio of water to petals. As you will see, my rose water gained more color as it cooled. The color of your water depends on the roses used, any kind will work!
This stays good in the fridge for up to a month, some recipes say to add 1/4 tsp of alcohol to make it last months but I have never tried this.

As someone who adores natural skincare, discovering the joy of making my very own rose water at home has been a game-changer! It's truly one of the simplest and most rewarding DIY projects, and honestly, nothing beats the feeling of knowing exactly what goes onto your skin. This homemade rose water, made simply with fresh roses and water, is a fantastic addition to any beauty routine. For me, it's become an essential step for my face. I've found it incredibly soothing, especially after a long day. It helps to gently tone my skin, leaving it feeling refreshed and looking a little brighter. It's a natural way to achieve that healthy glow without any harsh chemicals. You might be wondering, what can you actually do with your homemade rose water? The possibilities are endless! Facial Toner: After cleansing, a quick spritz or a swipe with a cotton pad preps your skin beautifully for serums and moisturizers. Refreshing Facial Mist: Keep a small spray bottle in your fridge for an instant pick-me-up throughout the day, especially in warmer weather. It's wonderfully cooling! Hair Rinse: Add a cup to your final hair rinse for a lovely scent and added shine. Makeup Setting Spray: A light mist can help your makeup settle and look more natural. Now, a quick note on what this *isn't*. Some people look for methods on "how to make rose hydrosol" or the "distillation process." While this method creates wonderful rose water, true rose hydrosol is made through a more complex steam distillation process, which does yield a different product with specific benefits. This simple simmering method, as described in the main article, is perfect for getting a potent, fragrant rose water right in your own home, without needing any special equipment. It's all about making your own beautiful concoction! I know some people search for "how to make rose water without boiling." While cold infusion is an option (soaking petals in water for an extended period), the simmering method (bringing to a boil, then reducing to a simmer for 15-20 minutes) is generally my go-to because it effectively extracts the beneficial compounds and fragrance more quickly and thoroughly. The key is to keep the heat low during the simmer to preserve those delicate rose properties. You'll notice the petals should lose all their color as their goodness transfers to the water – it's quite satisfying to watch! To get the best results, remember to collect 2 cups of roses, or whatever amount you choose, ensuring they are clean and free from pesticides. While the original article says "any kind will work," I've personally found that highly fragrant roses give the most aromatic and delightful rose water. For my method, I always aim for a 1:1 ratio of roses to water, using distilled water whenever possible for the purest result. Once you've strained your beautiful creation, remember to refrigerate it. It keeps well in the fridge for a month or longer. The tip about adding a 1/4 tsp of alcohol as a preservative is a great one if you want it to last even longer – I haven't tried it myself yet, but it's good to know! Plus, don't be surprised if your rose water gains more color as it cools; it's all part of the natural process. Making your own rose water is not only eco-friendly and cost-effective (especially if you have free roses!), but it also adds a touch of natural luxury to your self-care routine. Give it a try, and enjoy the pure, simple beauty of homemade skincare!
