Contractions don’t feel like period cramps

I have been dreaming about and manifesting for an unmediated birth since I watched The Business of Being Born back in Highschool. Currently, im a 31 yo teenager, so not too long ago 💅🏾😌

Anyways, for as long as I can remember, I’ve been trying to get an accurate description of what contractions felt like so I can mentally prepare to take them on.

Everyone always says they feel like period cramps but far stronger and more intense. Now, I have HORRIBLE and debilitating period cramps, so I couldn’t imagine that feeling, but worse.

Well homeskillet let me tell you that is NOT what they felt like. At least not for me, anyway.

Sure, the feeling of period cramps are a part of it. And if I’m being honest, that part of it was more tolerable than my actual period cramps, because I knew they’d only last for so long, and then I’d get a break.

But if I can describe it as accurately as possible, for me, contractions felt like your worst period cramps coupled with the worst trapped gas you’ve felt in your entire life. Add to that the feeling you get when you hold your bladder for entirely too long that even after you release it, it still hurts. 🙃🫠

If you’ve gone through it before, how would you describe them?

... Read moreOkay, so like many of you, I spent ages trying to figure out what contractions would actually feel like. Everyone says "like period cramps," but as another mama shared, that's often not the full picture! It can be so confusing, especially when you're in those early stages and every little twinge makes you wonder, "Is this it?!" Let's talk about those early labor cramps versus the real deal. From my own experience and what I've learned, those initial "cramps" or Braxton Hicks can be tricky. They might feel like a tightening across your belly, sometimes achy, but often they're irregular. You might get one, then nothing for an hour, then another. They don't usually get stronger, longer, or closer together. Sometimes, if I changed positions, walked around, or drank some water, they'd just fade away. It's like your body is doing a practice run, getting ready for the main event! True contractions, on the other hand, are a whole different beast. This is where the description "What CONTRACTIONS ACTUALLY feel like" really comes into play. They tend to follow a pattern: they start mild, build in intensity to a peak, and then gradually subside. Crucially, they become regular – maybe every 10 minutes, then every 7, then every 5. And they get stronger over time, no matter what you do. Lying down, walking, a warm bath – nothing really makes them go away if it's true labor. For me, they started feeling like a deep, internal pressure that gripped my entire abdomen and lower back. It wasn't just a surface cramp; it felt like my whole body was working with an incredible, undeniable force. One thing that really helped me tell the difference was focusing on the *progression*. With Braxton Hicks, there was no real progression. With true labor, I could feel a definite rhythm forming, and each wave felt more purposeful than the last. It's like your body is literally squeezing and releasing, preparing for birth. The pain isn't just discomfort; it's intense, all-consuming, and almost takes your breath away for that minute or so it lasts. But then, there's that blessed break! That's what makes them tolerable, knowing relief is coming. My advice for navigating this? Time them: Use an app or a clock. Look for regularity, increasing duration, and intensity. Change positions: If they ease up with movement or rest, it's probably not active labor. Hydrate: Sometimes dehydration can cause uterine irritability. Listen to your body: You know it best. If something feels truly different or concerning, don't hesitate to call your doctor or midwife. They've heard it all before! Remember, every birth experience is unique, and how contractions feel can vary. But understanding the typical patterns can help you feel more prepared and less anxious when those first sensations begin. You've got this, mama!
