I love running to Madison Ave when I want a reset. These are some of my favorite places in the Upper East Side to go to on a rainy afternoon (or any afternoon, really)…
The UES store has the best sales team and such cool interiors! I think they’re also the only store that sells their vintage archive. Try on some jeans and maybe take home a sweater or some basics while you’re at it 👀

It’s not just about the grand avenues; it’s about discovering those special, cozy corners that offer a true reset, especially on a rainy day. I frequently head to Madison Ave, and these are some of my absolute favorite indoor activities and things to do that truly make the UES feel like a hidden gem.
First on my list is always Fueguia 1833 Madison. Walking into this fragrance boutique is an experience in itself. Beyond just a place to buy perfume, it’s like stepping into an art gallery for your nose. The warm-toned interiors, complete with elegant wooden shelves displaying countless fragrance bottles, create an instantly cozy ambiance. Each scent has a unique story, often inspired by nature or historical figures, and the staff are incredibly knowledgeable, helping you navigate their extensive collection. I love how they present their fragrances; it’s a truly immersive sensory journey, making it a perfect spot to spend a leisurely indoor hour, far from the bustling city streets.
Then there’s Birley Bakery, a spot I rave about not just for its delectable treats but for its truly unique aesthetic. The exterior itself is charming, a classic red brick building with distinct yellow awnings marking the "Bakery" and "Chocolate" sections. But the real showstopper inside is the grand staircase adorned with a magnificent golden wall, detailed with painted cranes and autumn foliage. It’s an absolute dream for photo ops and adds such a luxurious, comforting feel. And yes, their pastries are just as incredible! From flaky croissants to rich chocolate delights, every bite feels like a small indulgence. Grabbing a coffee and a pastry here, while soaking in the beautiful surroundings, is one of my top Upper East Side things to do.
Zitomer is another UES institution that’s a must-visit. They literally have everything! While I initially discovered it because it’s the only place in the neighborhood that carries Dazzle Dry nail polish, I keep going back for the sheer joy of discovery. It’s a treasure trove of high-end beauty products, unique gifts, and often hard-to-find items. Browsing their shelves, filled with an array of beauty products, feels like a sophisticated treasure hunt. The distinctive patterned floor adds to its classic charm. It's a wonderful place to escape the weather and just meander, finding unexpected delights.
And for a bit of retail therapy, Still Here is my go-to. Their UES store has such cool interiors – it’s stylish yet inviting, with carefully folded jeans and various garments displayed beautifully. What makes it truly special is their curated selection and often, their vintage archive, offering unique pieces you won't find anywhere else. The sales team is fantastic, providing personalized service without ever feeling pushy. Trying on a few pairs of their cool jeans or finding a cozy sweater becomes a fun, relaxed indoor activity here. These spots, often nestled away on quieter streets, make the Upper East Side an ideal neighborhood for a serene afternoon, whether you're looking for a sensory journey, a sweet treat, a beauty find, or a unique fashion piece.
