The Dark Secrets Behind... John Frieda Haircare
I have loved using this John Frieda Detox & Repair Spray for 7 years now. It was supposed to protect my hair so I never suspected that it could be harming my health. Over the past year I started watching someone called "cancel this clothing company" on TikTok who teaches people about the dangerous dyes and ingredients in different foods and products. I was devastated when I started using databases to research the ingredients in this product.
I have to say that everything I write here is alleged and my opinion based on my own independent research and according to scientific research that has culminated on the "skin deep" database.
For better or for worse our skin is our largest organ which means that it can absorb external substances into our bloodstream and other organs. When I applied this spray of course some of it got on my scalp where it could be absorbed. Although it is not specifically chemically designed to absorb into my bloodstream that does not mean it won't be absorbed.
Some of the ingredients in this product are red flags to me after learning about how they have affected animals and humans in scientific studies. Let's go over these ingredients shall we:
🚩 FRAGRANCE - One or more studies show significant endocrine disruption according to open an publicly available scientific literature. This means that your hormones can be affected. Hormones determine how your body is regulated, it seems scary to me that something that important could be thrown out of whack or confused. It is also a known human immune system toxicant or allergen according to open scientific literature.
🚩CETRIMONIUM CHLORIDE - There is strong evidence that this ingredient can cause issues related to imminitoxicity and is a skin toxicant according to publicly available cosmetic ingredient review assessments. This means that your immune system could be poisoned... I don't know about you but I hate being sick so I can't have my immune system fail on me. I also wonder if I have been sick more than normal because I have historically used products like this. My family always pointed out since I was a teenager that I got sick more often than most other family members. What's even scarier than that though is there is evidence this product ingredient can cause neurotoxicity. One or more in vitro tests on mammalian cells demonstrate neurotoxicity (according to open scientific literature). But it doesn't stop there! One or more animal studies show the effects of developmental and reproductive toxicity at moderate doses according to open scientific literature. As someone who wants kids one day I do not want to face fertility issues. I now wonder if a lot of women do, because of product ingredients like these. This ingredient is also bad for our environment and is suspected to be an environmental toxin according to the "Environment Canada Domestic Substance List".
🚩 PROPYLPARABEN - This ingredient has the risk of everything noted above AND One or more animal studies show any effects of developing toxins at low doses according to open scientific literature.
🚩DIAZOLIDINYL UREA - This ingredient is allegedly contaminated with 🚩FORMALDEHYDE🚩 which is a known human carcinogen ( a carcinogen is a substance, organism or agent capable of causing cancer.) this is according to MANY sources such as: Int'l Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), NTP Report on Carcinogens, 11th Edition, California EPA Proposition 65, EPA Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), Amer Conf of Gov't Industrial Hygienists - CPS&Q - Classification & Labelling and NIOSH Occupational Carcinogens. Anything that could cause me to have cancer and go through the immense pain and suffering my grandma suffered in her 3 battles with the disease is an immediate screaming siren to me. I wanted to chuck this product out the window when I learned this (I am quite serious). Anything that could cause me to leave my future children without a mother is not worth the risk no matter what it is period.
I have to wonder... these companies must know what these ingredients are if they are putting them in their products. Are they doing this on purpose? Are they in collusion with the pharmaceutic industries in the United States? When I dug deeper into countries where some of these harmful ingredients are banned it was interesting to me that they cannot be sold in places like Canada with systems like socialized healthcare where the government would be responsible for healing the diseases caused by these ingredients. But in a country like the United States where the government is not liable they allow it... this last paragraph are the thoughts that go through my own mind and of course my personal options but what do you think? 🤔

When you’re looking at labels, keep an eye out for those common 'red flag' ingredients that I mentioned: synthetic fragrance (often a catch-all for hundreds of undisclosed chemicals), parabens (like Propylparaben, linked to endocrine disruption), and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives such as Diazolidinyl Urea. For those of us seeking genuine 'damage repair' and 'frizz ease' without the hidden dangers, there are fantastic alternatives out there. I’ve personally transitioned to 'clean beauty' brands that prioritize transparency and use naturally derived ingredients. For repairing damaged hair, I love using pure argan oil or jojoba oil as treatments, and products with plant-based proteins like hydrolyzed pea or rice protein. For frizz control, I’ve found silicone-free serums made with natural emollients like shea butter or coconut alkanes work wonders, leaving my hair smooth and healthy without the heavy, potentially harmful film. Remember, our scalp is our largest organ, and what we put on it can be absorbed into our system. Choosing cleaner products for your hair isn't just about aesthetics; it's a vital step for your overall well-being, from hormone balance to immune health. Don't be afraid to question, research, and switch to products that truly care for you!
