Surfing in Santa Cruz! ✨🌸🍋

⭐️Overall rating: 9/10

... Read moreOkay, so I finally made my first surfing vlog as a beginner, and guess what? Santa Cruz was absolutely magical! I was a little hesitant because, honestly, getting good surfing footage as a newbie can be tough. But today, the small waves were my friend, and I decided to just go for it. If you're asking, 'Is Santa Cruz good for surfing for beginners?' – my answer is a resounding YES! It’s one of the best surf spots for beginners in California, hands down. The vibe here is super welcoming, and there are several spots perfect for easing into the sport. My top pick for absolute beginners has to be Cowell's Beach, right next to the Santa Cruz Wharf. The waves here are consistently mellow and long, giving you plenty of time to pop up and ride. It’s usually pretty crowded, but everyone's generally supportive. Another fantastic option is Capitola Beach. It also offers gentle, rolling waves, and the scenery is just beautiful, especially with the village nearby. On super small days, even parts of Pleasure Point can be manageable for beginners, but it's generally considered a bit more advanced, so proceed with caution and maybe an instructor. I mean, the waves were pretty small when I went, and it took a while between sets, which was actually perfect for a beginner like me – less tiring and more time to recover! And the best part? I saw a cute sea otter floating right near me! It was such a surreal moment. For anyone thinking about trying it, here are a few things I learned. First, always wear your SPF! My SPF was still there even after my session, which is a big win. You can rent boards and wetsuits easily from shops around town, or even take a beginner lesson. Don't be afraid to fall; it's part of the fun! Focus on getting comfortable paddling and catching those gentle whitewater waves first. Why is Santa Cruz often hailed as one of the best surf spots for beginners in California? Beyond just the gentle waves at specific locations, it’s the overall surf culture. There are numerous surf schools offering lessons tailored for first-timers, and the local surf shops are always ready with advice and gear rentals. Plus, the community is generally very welcoming to new surfers, understanding that everyone has to start somewhere. You'll see people of all ages and skill levels out in the water, which makes it less intimidating. Beyond the specific spots, understanding the conditions is key. On days when the waves are small and the wind isn't strong, it's ideal for learning. You want those consistent, rolling waves, not big, powerful breaks. Always check the surf report before you head out, and don't hesitate to ask locals for advice on current conditions. Even if you don't 'stand up' right away, just paddling out and feeling the ocean's energy is an incredible experience. Remember, consistency is more important than strength when you're starting out. I really focused on my paddle technique and getting a feel for the board, and that made a huge difference. After a session, you'll be hungry! Post-surf Costco runs for some food are a must. Seriously, nothing beats a hot dog after a successful beginner surf. Santa Cruz truly delivers a wonderful surfing experience, especially if you're just starting out. I highly recommend checking it out if you're looking for beginner surf spots in Santa Cruz or just surfing spots in general that are friendly to new riders!

3 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING SANTA TERESA 🌴🥥🏄🏻‍♂️🇨🇷
1️⃣ 💰🏠🌮 It’s not as cheap as other countries in Central America. For many shops, hotels, and trendy restaurants expect to pay US prices. If you’re looking to spend less, try any of the sodas (local Costa Rican restaurants) and staying in a shared room in a hostel (Selina, Somos, Believe). 2️⃣ 🌦️

The Mystery Spot Santa Cruz?!
You walk in thinking it’s just a normal cabin… and then suddenly nothing makes sense. At the Mystery Spot, you’re watching balls roll uphill, water flow the wrong way, and somehow people change height right in front of you. And even when you know it’s an illusion… your brain still won’t accept it
