📚Iron Flame Book Review🐉

Some sequels make you fall right back into the story. This one made me wait for it.

Iron Flame felt like one long build-up. Not in a bad way exactly, because I never fully disconnected from it—but I also never fully felt in it the way I did with the first book.

The pacing just felt slower, more stretched out, like it was constantly setting pieces in place and telling me the payoff was coming… without it actually arriving for a long time. I kept thinking “okay, now it’s going to pick up,” and it would tease that moment, then shift back into more setup again.

Because of that, I never felt fully gripped in the middle the way I wanted to be. I wasn’t bored, but I wasn’t obsessed either—and that’s a big difference compared to how instantly hooked I was with the first book.

And then the final stretch hits.

And it hits hard. Suddenly everything escalates, everything feels urgent, emotional, intense—exactly what I was waiting for the entire time. The ending honestly delivers in a way that makes you understand what the book was building toward the whole time.

But I can’t ignore that it took so long to get there.

By the time I was fully invested, I was already near the end. And that’s what makes this one so hard to rate for me—the payoff is genuinely strong, but the journey to get there felt uneven.

I’m glad I read it. I just wish I had been just as hooked in the beginning and middle as I was in those final pages.

5/25 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, fellow dragon riders, let's dive into the initial pages of 'Iron Flame.' Like many of you, I eagerly picked up this sequel right after finishing the first book, hoping for that immediate adrenaline rush. But if you felt a bit of a lull at the start, you're definitely not alone! I remember looking at the impressive page count – a hefty one, for sure – and wondering if the pace would ever truly pick up. The original review mentioned the build-up, and I think a lot of that comes from how Rebecca Yarros chose to set the stage this time around. Compared to the lightning-fast introduction of the first book, 'Iron Flame' takes its time establishing new political intrigue and character dynamics. While I appreciated seeing the familiar fiery dragon symbol on the book cover again, the narrative felt a bit like a slow burn as it meticulously laid out the groundwork for future conflicts. I've seen some discussions online, and many readers, myself included, felt like it wasn't until around the 100-150 page mark that things really started to accelerate. If you're struggling through those initial chapters, my advice is to stick with it! Trust me, the payoff is absolutely worth it. For those who loved the immediate action of 'Fourth Wing,' the 'start page' experience of 'Iron Flame' might feel quite different. It's less about the thrill of new dragon bonding and more about navigating complex relationships and foreshadowing major, impending events. The book cover, featuring that majestic white dragon and rider, while iconic, doesn't quite prepare you for the slower, more deliberate pacing of the early narrative. But honestly, looking back, I realize these slower moments were crucial. They built the foundation for the explosive ending that ultimately earned this book its high rating, even if it wasn't a 4.5-star ride from page one. So, if you're just starting 'Iron Flame' or are curious about what to expect in those initial chapters, be patient. Let the intricate world-building and character development truly sink in. It’s a different kind of magic, but just as rewarding once you push through that initial setup. What were your thoughts on the beginning of the book? Did you find yourself waiting for it to pick up too?

My question for you is not going to be, “What did you think of this story,” but instead, if you did not care for Fourth Wing/Iron Flame, what book would you recommend instead? If you thought Fourth Wing was poorly written (more specifically, prose-wise), what is a book you think is written better?
