Did We Really Need Book 2? 🤔

I hate saying this because I usually love Rina Kent’s books, but Steel Princess was a letdown for me.

This book felt like it could have been condensed into a few chapters. Honestly, it wasn’t until about 75% of the way through that I felt like anything significant actually happened. The rest felt repetitive and dragged on, which made it hard to stay invested.

I’m still going to read Twisted Kingdom because I need to know how Elsa and Aiden’s story ends, but I genuinely think this could have been a duology instead of a trilogy. Book 2 felt like filler, and I don’t think much would have been lost if it had been merged into the final book.

It definitely won’t stop me from reading more Rina Kent, but this one just wasn’t for me.

... Read moreAs an avid reader of Rina Kent’s works, I was also curious about how ‘Steel Princess,’ the second installment in the Royal Elite series, would hold up compared to her other books. The storyline around Elsa and Aiden intrigued me, as much of Kent’s writing blends dark romance with intense character conflicts. However, I found that this book struggled with pacing issues that made it difficult to stay fully engaged. From my experience, the plot seemed to stretch out unnecessarily, with significant developments emerging only late in the story. This aligns with what many readers cite when they describe a middle book in a trilogy as ‘filler.’ It’s disappointing because the premise is strong – a princess challenging royal expectations and the idea that "The princess isn't supposed to dethrone the king" adds compelling tension. But the execution left me feeling that the momentum stalled. One way I dealt with the slow parts was by focusing on character moments rather than the main plot, savoring the interactions and emotional struggles of Elsa and Aiden. This is often where Kent shines, creating authentic feelings despite structural problems. Still, I hope future books in the series streamline the narrative to maintain suspense without the repetitive stretches. For readers who love dark romance and royalty-centered stories, I’d recommend giving ‘Steel Princess’ a chance but perhaps treating it as a bridge to the more exciting conclusion in ‘Twisted Kingdom.’ Personally, I’m continuing the series because I want closure on Elsa’s journey and to see how Kent resolves the conflicts. If you find yourself frustrated by books that drag, you might experience similar challenges here. On the bright side, it’s a reminder that sometimes, even a favorite author produces a book that doesn’t quite hit the mark, which is natural in any prolific career.
