Parenting is deeply influenced by our own childhood experiences, and choosing to heal those past wounds can lead to profoundly different ways of raising our children. When I began reflecting on my upbringing, I realized how my childhood shaped my instinctive responses as a mom. It wasn’t easy to confront those memories, but doing so allowed me to break patterns that I didn’t want to pass down. One practical change I made was focusing on empathy and active listening with my kids, noticing when old fears or reactions surfaced within me during stressful moments. By acknowledging these feelings, I could respond more thoughtfully rather than automatically. This shift improved our communication and helped my children feel genuinely heard and supported. Additionally, exploring self-care became essential. Taking time for myself to heal and recharge created a more positive environment at home. It’s important to remember that healing is an ongoing process—there are setbacks and breakthroughs—but each step forward positively impacts how we parent. Sharing this journey with other moms, especially through supportive communities online like #momsoftiktok, has been invaluable. It fosters connection and reminds us that we are not alone in striving to do our best despite challenges. Ultimately, healing my childhood means parenting my kids differently, with more kindness, patience, and growth, and it’s a transformative experience anyone can embark on.
