do you suspect that you may have ADHD?

Although I have had ADHD my entire life (thank you mom who I inherited it from), I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 19 years old.

Why?

Because I masked, hard, and because not everyone with ADHD has the stereotypical obvious symptoms such as hyperactivity and impulse control problems.

Some of the signs are quieter, but still just as impactful when it comes to living out your daily life. #lemon8partner #adhdcommunity #adhdinwomen

... Read moreLike many of you, I spent years wondering, 'Do I have ADHD?' The stereotypes of hyperactive boys jumping off walls didn't resonate with my experience. I was a quiet observer, often lost in thought, yet constantly felt like I was battling an unseen force. It wasn't until much later that I realized how much I had been masking, unconsciously adapting to fit into a world that wasn't designed for my brain. Masking ADHD, especially for women and those assigned female at birth, is incredibly common. We learn to suppress our true struggles, appearing organized or attentive on the surface, while internally, our minds are a whirlwind. This often leads to delayed diagnoses, as professionals might overlook the internal chaos when external behavior seems 'normal.' For me, it meant always feeling exhausted from the effort of pretending to keep up. One of the most persistent and frustrating 'quiet signs' I've experienced, and something I hear often in the #adhdcommunity, is the inexplicable struggle with seemingly simple tasks like laundry (start to finish). It’s not about being lazy; it’s about executive dysfunction. The thought process for laundry isn't just 'wash clothes.' It involves gathering, sorting, washing, drying, folding, and putting away – a multi-step process that requires initiation, sequencing, and sustained attention. For me, the clean clothes would often sit in a basket for days, sometimes weeks, becoming what we lovingly call 'clean-dirty' clothes. It felt like an insurmountable mountain, even though I knew how to do it. If you find yourself constantly battling this seemingly minor chore, it might be a subtle sign your brain works a little differently. Another fascinating, less obvious sign that often surprises people is a paradoxical reaction to stimulants. Have you ever downed a coffee, late at night, expecting to be wired, only to find you drift off to sleep, no problem? This happens to many individuals with ADHD. While stimulants typically energize neurotypical brains, they can have a calming, focusing effect on an ADHD brain. It’s not universal, but if caffeine doesn't seem to 'work' on you the way it does for others, or even makes you feel more relaxed, it could be an indicator of an underlying difference in your neurotransmitter system. It was a huge 'aha!' moment for me when I realized my nightly coffee habit wasn't keeping me awake, but actually helping me wind down. Beyond these, there are other subtle ADHD signs that often go unnoticed. Time blindness is a big one – the inability to accurately perceive the passage of time, leading to constant lateness or hyperfocus that makes hours disappear. Or intense emotional responses; what's known as emotional dysregulation, where small triggers can lead to overwhelming feelings. Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), an intense sensitivity to perceived criticism or rejection, is also highly prevalent. These aren't the dramatic hyperactivity symptoms we often see portrayed, but they significantly impact daily life and mental well-being. Recognizing these quieter signs you might have ADHD can be incredibly validating. It’s not about finding excuses, but understanding your brain's unique wiring. If these experiences resonate with you, it's a powerful first step towards seeking clarity. Remember, this isn't a diagnosis, but an invitation to explore further. Connecting with an #adhdcommunity, doing more research, and speaking with a healthcare professional can open doors to understanding and managing your unique brain.
