From the amazing design of the are to the beautiful areas to walk around! We spent the whole day just exploring around! 🌳
Within the museum there were many exhibits ranging from:
A human history and cultures showing how each race and ethnicity were seen and how much we are truly alike and how racism came to be. There is an entire collective of an ongoing project for years I highly recommend you check out. It was heavy getting through all the information (as a white woman myself it definitely shows how our system has failed so many)
There was a beautiful Egypt section that went into the history and beautiful items ranging from ca. 330-650 CE/Egypt to so many unknown to still uncover!! I truly enjoyed looking at the Egyptian collection and the items they held to create them! I’ll make another post showing more of what was seen! (Look for the Egypt post! 🕋)
There was a Native section in this museum as well going through a sweep of the process of things which I found fascinating! So much so I may go home and attempt to make some things! Gave lists of materials and how they were gathered and used for baskets, clothing, pottery, instruments, and much more! 🪘 I’ll make another post of more! (Look for the Native post!)
One thing in this museum that caught my attention was the ongoing Post Secret Project!
People get to mail in all their secrets to a collective and they are part of this beautiful art installation project where you can go through and read many submissions from light to dark scenarios. (There will be another post of this as well with more information as I found it entirely consuming and even added my own letter!) Look for the Post Secret post! 🤫
... Read moreVisiting the Museum of Us provides a deeply enriching experience that goes beyond typical museum exhibits. One aspect that truly stands out is how the museum embraces the complexity of human history and culture through collaborative community involvement, such as the insightful Maya Consultants’ project. This initiative was central to reshaping the Maya exhibition to authentically represent the living culture, languages, and histories of Maya peoples from regions like the Yucatan Peninsula and parts of Central America. The consultants worked alongside the museum team for over two years, ensuring the exhibit was shaped by the voices of Maya scholars, artists, and community members rather than only academic perspectives. This approach adds a profound dimension to understanding indigenous cultures as vibrant and evolving rather than relics of the past.
Additionally, the museum’s Egyptian collection, spanning approximately 330-650 CE, showcases intricate artifacts that reveal production techniques, lifestyle, and art from that historic era. These well-curated pieces allow visitors to connect with a civilization full of mysteries, with ongoing discoveries still to be made. The Native American section further enriches the visit by offering an in-depth look at traditional crafting methods for baskets, clothing, pottery, and instruments, complete with detailed lists of natural materials and their sourcing techniques. For those interested in hands-on experiences, this section inspires creative attempts at traditional crafts, fostering a tangible connection to Native heritage.
One of the most unique features at the Museum of Us is the Post Secret Project, a compelling interactive art installation where people submit anonymous secrets through mail. This collective exhibit provides a raw and emotional narrative that spans a wide range of human experiences, from lighthearted confessions to deeper, darker stories. Engaging with this project creates a powerful sense of community and shared humanity.
Overall, the Museum of Us offers a space for reflection on race, identity, and the interconnectedness of cultures worldwide. It challenges visitors to confront difficult truths about systemic failures while celebrating the resilience and creativity of peoples across history. Spending a day exploring its grounds enriches your understanding of what it means to be part of the global human family and leaves a lasting impression rooted in empathy and knowledge.
