I Just Survived My 1st Speaking Panel
Participating in your first speaking panel can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. From my experience, preparation is key. I made sure to research the panel topic thoroughly and understand the audience's interests. Connecting with the panelists beforehand helped reduce anxiety and created a more comfortable setting. On the day of the panel, I focused on nerves management techniques, such as deep breathing and visualization exercises, which kept me calm and focused. Dressing professionally and feeling confident in my appearance also boosted my morale — I even visited my barber the night before to get ready properly. During the discussion, active listening was essential. It allowed me to respond thoughtfully and engage with other panelists effectively. I also made sure to speak clearly and concisely, avoiding filler words to maintain professionalism. Reflecting on this experience, I recommend those new to panels to embrace vulnerability and see it as an opportunity to grow. Remember, every expert was once a beginner, and each panel you participate in builds your confidence and skills. If you're preparing for your first panel, consider practicing with friends, reviewing common questions, and planning your key points. Most importantly, be authentic—your unique perspective is what makes your contribution valuable.
