Gaslighting Sounds Like

... Read moreFrom personal experience, encountering gaslighting can be deeply confusing and emotionally exhausting. Often, the person employing gaslighting uses subtle language tricks to make you question your own reality and feelings. Phrases like "You're so emotional," "I never did that," or "You're remembering things wrong" are common tactics designed to invalidate your experience and make you doubt yourself. In my journey to understand gaslighting, I realized how these words create a toxic environment where the victim feels isolated and unsure. It’s crucial to recognize that statements such as "It’s your fault," "You’re imagining things," or "Don’t be so sensitive" are not just casual remarks but manipulative strategies to control and undermine your confidence. One effective approach to counter gaslighting is to document conversations and events. Writing down what you remember can help you maintain clarity and stand firm when your perceptions are challenged. Additionally, seeking support from trusted friends or mental health professionals can provide validation and guidance. Understanding that phrases like "I was just joking" or "You sound so crazy" are often used to dismiss your feelings enables you to set boundaries and protect your emotional health. Learning to identify these signs early can empower you to address toxic behaviors before they escalate. Remember, gaslighting is about power and control. Recognizing the sound of gaslighting equips you with the knowledge to reclaim your narrative and prioritize your well-being.

ok, my take on the defensive remark. one doesn't have to be a person who gaslights to say this. I do not gaslight people, however, if they start acting a fool by jumping straight to being defensive when we are having a conversation, I'm calling it out. not in the manner to control, but in the manner to bring awareness. I will say, I didn't bring up this discussion to make you feel bad/less than, or to upset you and make you feel like you have to be defensive...I want to have a discussion about this without anyone getting upset. my husband has horrible insecurities and he is the main culprit. if he forgets to do something and I ask, he immediately jumps to defensive mode like I attacked him (I assure you, that isn't the case). he has been this way since we met 20 years ago. he is projecting his emotions about himself, onto me. yes, he does that a lot. projection is a real thing. however, my point is, when someone asks why you are being so defensive, it doesn't automatically mean they are gaslighting. maybe in a case of a gaslighter, but not in all cases.
