Are You Gaslighting Yourself & Don't Even Know It?

Have you ever felt like your inner voice is your worst critic?

Like it’s constantly whispering doubts and dismissing your feelings?

That’s self-gaslighting—

it’s when you minimize your own emotions, tell yourself you’re being too much, or brush off your experiences as unimportant.

But let me tell you something: your feelings matter.

Every tear, every pang of doubt, every moment of confusion—it’s all part of your truth.

And when you start believing yourself instead of questioning everything, magic happens.

The first step is recognizing those sneaky thoughts that tell you you’re “too sensitive” or “overreacting.”

The next? Replacing them with words of kindness and truth. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.

You are not broken. You are not “too much.”

You are worthy of being heard—even by yourself. 🌟

Follow along Roll Pretty —we’re diving deeper into self healing.

... Read moreIt's a tough moment when you realize, 'Wait, am I gaslighting myself?' Believe me, I've been there. That sinking feeling of recognizing those subtle ways you invalidate your own experiences can be disheartening. But acknowledging it is the powerful first step towards genuinely healing. So, let's really break down what self-gaslighting means. The OCR in my notes perfectly defines gaslighting as 'when someone makes you question what's real—your feelings, memories, or even your thoughts. It's like planting a seed of doubt in your mind until you don't trust yourself anymore.' When we do this to ourselves, it's an insidious pattern where our inner critic mimics an external abuser, making us doubt our own reality. It's not just minimizing emotions; it's actively discrediting your internal compass. Why do we fall into this trap? Often, it's a learned behavior. Perhaps we grew up in environments where our feelings were dismissed, or we experienced actual gaslighting from others. Over time, we internalize those voices, becoming our own worst critic. Perfectionism, fear of judgment, or a deep-seated belief that we're 'not enough' can also fuel these 'unkind patterns we need to unlearn,' as the OCR puts it. You might find yourself saying, 'It wasn't that bad,' even when it absolutely was, or 'I'm probably just overreacting,' silencing a valid emotional response. Challenging these thoughts requires conscious effort, but it's incredibly rewarding. When you catch yourself thinking, 'I'm so stupid for feeling this way,' pause. Instead of letting it snowball, try asking yourself: Is this thought truly helpful? Is there evidence to support it, or is it just my inner critic? A powerful technique I've found is to personify that inner critic. Imagine it as a separate entity trying to protect you (albeit poorly) or mimic past negative influences. This creates a distance, allowing you to observe the thought rather than fuse with it. Another practical step is to keep a 'feelings journal.' When you have a strong emotional reaction, instead of immediately dismissing it, write it down. Describe the emotion, what triggered it, and how it physically feels. This process validates your experience, making it real and undeniable. It helps to counter the 'maybe it's all in my head' thought. Finally, let's talk about cultivating those 'gentle truths to guide you back to yourself,' as highlighted in the OCR. This isn't about forced positivity; it's about genuine self-compassion. Start with small affirmations based on reality, like 'My experiences are valid' or 'My emotions are worth listening to.' Instead of demanding perfection, acknowledge your efforts: 'I'm doing the best I can, and that's enough.' Learning to trust your inner voice again is a journey, not a destination. It involves consistently choosing to believe yourself, even when it feels uncomfortable. Remember, you deserve to be heard, especially by the person who knows you best: yourself.

Now that I look at it and some of the examples that she posted I definitely think that I’ve been gaslighting myself. Sometimes it’s hard to realize something when you’re in the moment, but looking at this has me reflecting on the way I treat myself.
