Trip toEgypt

... Read moreYou know how some trips just stick with you? My recent adventure to Egypt is definitely one of those! While the majestic ancient columns and intricate hieroglyphic carvings in the tombs totally blew my mind, I also fell head over heels for the shopping, especially when it came to finding unique souvenirs. I've been asked so much about what I brought back, and honestly, the star of my haul has to be the stunning Egyptian alabaster pieces! Before I went, I did a little research, and everyone kept mentioning alabaster. It's this beautiful, translucent mineral that ancient Egyptians used for everything from canopic jars to small statues. And let me tell you, stepping into some of those vibrant souvenir shops in Luxor and Aswan, packed with shelves displaying numerous ancient Egyptian-themed artifacts, statues, and decorative pottery, it was easy to get overwhelmed. But I was on a mission to find authentic alabaster. Here's my personal secret to finding genuine Egyptian alabaster: First, feel it. Real alabaster should feel cool and smooth to the touch, even in the bustling heat of a market. If it feels warm or like plastic, it's probably not the real deal. Second, hold it up to the light. Many authentic alabaster pieces, especially the thinner ones, will be somewhat translucent, allowing light to pass through softly, sometimes revealing beautiful natural patterns within the stone. I even saw some small vases that glowed subtly with candlelight – absolutely magical! Another tip is the weight; genuine alabaster is quite dense and has a satisfying heft to it, unlike lighter resin or plastic imitations. I spent quite a bit of time in a shop near the Valley of the Kings, chatting with the artisan. He showed me how they carve these pieces, which often include exquisite depictions of pharaohs, scarab beetles, or traditional Egyptian symbols. I ended up getting a gorgeous alabaster vase with delicate carvings and a small statue of Bastet, the cat goddess. What I loved about this experience was not just the purchase, but the story behind it. It’s not just a souvenir; it’s a piece of Egyptian history and craftsmanship. Bargaining is also a big part of the experience in these markets. Don't be afraid to haggle a bit, but always be respectful and friendly. I found that starting a conversation and showing genuine interest in their craft often led to a fairer price and a more enjoyable interaction. So, if you're planning your own Egyptian adventure, amidst cruising the Nile on a felucca or marveling at the desert coastline, make sure to set aside time for souvenir hunting. And definitely put authentic Egyptian alabaster on your must-buy list! It's a truly timeless and beautiful reminder of an incredible journey.
